This story is by far the first and best story with the first master 'Roger Delgado'. This face when he hypnotises you is by far scary and great, he will always be the master RIP.

If ever you doubted that Doctor Who Classics were frightening, or wondered why people always remember hiding behind the settee, this Jon Pertwee story illustrates the fear factor, 1970's style. Everyday plastic objects coming alive, becoming deadly killers; plastic dummies shooting people down and disguising themselves as benign-looking policemen. Not to mention the introduction of the Doctor's arch nemesis, The Master - showing why he is one of the most evil geniouses in the cosmos. Whatever you do, don't look into his eyes! If you are only going to buy one Doctor Who classic - buy this one. No wonder there was so much publicity about the scariness of the programme at the time.
  • Bring back what used to be Doctor Who

I think the David tennant era is ok but the old characters are what made doctor who, they brought seriousness and good complicated stories for watchers to figure out, also the old serials came in episodes from 6 - 10 parts which realistically would give the doctor more time to figure things out and now it only gives him 45 minutes, unbelievable.
  • Auton Return!

The Autons return to Earth with the assistance of the Master. Can the Doctor foil the Master's plan and save the Earth from the Autons? There are some good scenes, and plenty of action in this story, and the rare appearance of a Time Lord who turns up to warn the Doctor of the Master's involvement. Well worth the watch. This story is the first where we encounter the Doctor's nemesis - The Master (played brilliantly by Roger Delgardo). The Master was introduced to be the Doctor's 'Moriarty'. It is also the first story to feature Jo Grant (Katy Manning), and would set the formula for the rest of this particular series, until the untimely death of Roger Delgardo in a car accident. Katy Manning then made a sudden exit as Jo in the Green Death, which eventually led to Jon Pertwee deciding to hang up his coat as the Doctor.
  • An exciting debut for The Master

So, the Doctor now has his Moriarty in the form of renegade Time Lord, The Master. Roger Delgado shines in this story, which is great fun. Jo Grant aka Katy Manning set the standard for 70's companions, and today's getting some action of her own, unusual back then. The Autons return again, with some novel ways of killing people, including that troll doll! Pertwee was excellent in this story, and clearly enjoying the part. Only 4 stars because it doesn't hit the heights of my favourites Genesis and Androzani!
