  • Poor end for a poor Doctor

    Uninvolving, overly complicated and largely incomprehensible finale for a Doctor and an era of which these have sadly been the trademarks. Why was the Master disguised as Rasputin - beyond allowing him to dance to Boney M? (Admittedly the best bit of the whole thing). Why was he putting himself (badly) in the paintings? Why didn’t the Daleks simply bombard the earth from space? What was the point of it all? It’s a pity as Whittaker promised so much and yet it all came to naught. And, as others have pointed out - £9.99 for a special that is readily and freely available on iPlayer in the UK? Makes about as much sense as the special itself.

    £9.99 - someone having a giraffe for something that is free on tv and bang averrage at best!

    The Jodie Whittaker era has been rather wan and shabby. She’s done her best but the writing for her has been dismal, forcing her to gurn and run around like a child needing Ritalin to paper over the cracks. So my expectations for this finale - written by the outgoing showrunner - weren’t high. Surprisingly, though, this is a rather spirited outing. It’s a mess structurally and it’s a tad worrying that the Master is far more compelling and enjoyable than the Doctor here. But the reappearance of old Doctors and companions is a joy and the effects are, largely, first rate. Best of all is the regeneration of Whittaker into David Tennant. A reminder of how much better this show used to be and the promise, we hope, of better scripts to come.

    Amazing end to an era, full of action, fan-service and The Master being very mastery. Chibnall’s best episode by far.

    £9.99 seems rather a lot just for a feature length episode;
