Description

Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as Ben Richards, a cop in the totalitarian America of 2019, framed for massacring rioting civilians during a famine. After escaping from jail, Richards tries to prove his innocence, but his efforts are thwarted at every turn by a regime in need of a scapegoat. Richards is captured along with an innocent civilian, Amber Mendez (Maria Conchita Alonso), and they are forced to participate in a violent game show called "The Running Man," hosted by the unctuous Damon Killian (Richard Dawson). The object of the game for Richards and Mendez: obtain freedom by staying alive against a gauntlet of skillful assassins like "Subzero" (Prof. Toru Tanaka) and "Captain Freedom" (Jesse Ventura), each armed with unique weapons like razor-sharp hockey sticks and chainsaws. With the help of some fellow "contestants," Richards is able to tap into government computers and prove his innocence. The Running Man was very loosely based on a short story by Stephen King, who wrote it under the name Richard Bachman.

The film itself is not too bad. I never appreciated it when it was out many years ago. It was interesting to see it again... So the good news, it's the best version of the film so far. But the bad news is that the 4K is poor. In comparison to Red Heat, it's nowhere near as good. It's soft, grainy, blurry and lighting is fluorescent and doesnt show off any of the sci-fi elements I was hoping for. Film 7/10 4K 4/10

...Classic 80โ€™s AS. A tongue-in-cheek dated clichรฉ, but nonetheless brilliant in its nostalgic 80โ€™s way.
  • A good classic

ยฃ7 on apple tv or ยฃ10 on tuned in hd, is not reasonable for an 80's movie. I wish apple would stop controlling the availability for rental like this, it makes the buyer feel manipulated and dents the loyalty that many of us have to the brand.

excellent movie. way ahead of its time for the 80s. just like Blade Runner. only Arnie is the top action lead. but without the cast, it would have turned ut very different. good movie. too bad not one in the UK with special features. great story is what surprised me. usually Arnie films are gung ho kill and more macho action (my kind of films) but this one grips you from start to finish and tells of a censored world where entertainment is the penal justice of the law. it must have inspired many films about centralised control and censored information like EQUILIBRIUM. good film - buy it and enjoy it forever. great soundtrack too.
