Sigh. This film had such potential. As always, superb acting from the cast, there were some good, funny moments and the cinematography is gorgeous. But it just didn't deliver, at times ridiculously unbelievable. The plot was rather vague and while it explored some intriguing themes and had it's good points, it was just not up to scratch. Drastic misuse of the Klingons. It's worth a watch but don't go in with high expectations.

This is one of the best Star Trek films! Scotty is just so funny and Uhura (my idol) shows real girl power! As well as that, the Klingons are truly deadly. Highly recommended😀!!!!!
  • Not bad, not great either!

This movie is 40 % interesting and 60 % dull. Shatner has some decent ideas but do not translate across in this film. Immediately you can tell compared to S.T IV the budget was drastically reduced and most of the money went on the films only redeeming area of production quality : Jerry Goldsmith's score. If they let Shatner have a decent budget this would have been a markedly better film overall. This is a worthwhile film but do not expect the level of filmmaking of the first 4 films of the series.
  • Shatners Epic Space Gem!

This film is cruelly under rated. A remarkably good film considering it's the fifth in the series. Shatner directed and co-wrote this surprisingly epic outing for the enterprise crew. The direction is crisp and cinematic. And charector moments are warm, heartbreaking and genuine. Much is made about the films deleted extended ending. Much is made of the the reduction of effects money. Much was made of shatners original script being changed by the studio. But despite all this William Shatner still delivers a great action space adventure. Very action packed, fast paced and entertaining! An excellent journey into the unknown.
  • Why not....

The film is now 20 years old so what is there left to say? In fairness it does have it problems- not least the done on the cheap fx. And the hinted at romance between Uhura and Scotty was really quite unbelievable. But...... dig a bit deeper and there is some great character moments for each of the Big3 particularly. Spock's pain at feeling unwanted by his father. McCoy's sense of loss at his fathers death and Kirk's reignited passion for his ship and her crew following the harrowing events of the previous movies. Unfortunately the secondary crew members are largely there for laughs and are not really treated with the respect they perhaps deserve- Sulu and Chekov lost in the woods?! hmmmm. Even I can't get lost with a satnav! Still, it does have some fun value and definitely has its moments. I'd rather watch this than 3 out of the 4 TNG movies.

I've seen some rubbish follow up films in my time and this one is definately up there with police academy, the 1st few were really good and the next generation ones were well worth it but for some reason this one was totally rubbish. Not even worth renting let alone buying.
  • It has it's charm

Bill Shatner is often blamed for the film being a bit lame but that's not really fair as there were a host of problems plaguing the production, actor strikes, ILM not being available .. plus the FX budget was kinda spent very quickly. This film was intended as a Special FX tour de force, but lots of things conspired to stop this. Still .. it has it's charm. The only thing I'd blame Bill for is chosing a story which is frankly not so great .. however despite this .. it is very much what Trek is about. If you read between the lines the whole show is about the human condition .. and about the need to reach higher goals. Just a shame they couldn't have picked a more interesting subject matter to show it. Good points include one of Jerry Goldsmiths most underated musical scores (the CD album does NOT do it justice) and for Goldsmith fans it's really worth watching this film just to hear the maestros brilliant music at work. In fact the music often saves this movie. Some great photography .. whatever you might say about the plot .. the locations and filming are really well done and executed. Some great laughs (Including the toilet that has the sign "Do not use whilst in spacedock!"). And some interesting reuse of the Next Gen. sets. Nice new bridge set though, designed by the same guy who did the Next Gen. sets. Bad points include fairly bad special FX .. considering the amazing model work of the first film Apogee FX really didn't live up to what ILM were doing 10 years earlier. And the Klingon element is REALLY contrived .. although one has to like the lead Klingons because they're so cute together .. and spoke in real Klingonese. Overall you can't deny this film it's place in the film series. It has some very good points and if given a chance one can enjoy it as well as any other trek film. Personally I thought Bill Shatner did a great job in directing this movie and its a worthy piece to add to anyones library.
  • When Shatner Directs....

While not quite the "When Shatner Directs...." disaster that it has been painted as, "The Final Frontier" suffers from poor special effects, a clumsy storyline that introduces Spock's evangelistic half-brother Sybok and ludicrously sees the Enterprise quite literally quest to "find God". If none of that sounds appealing, it does have a camp kind of fun quality and is rarely boring, with a refreshing use of outdoor locations.
