The 4K, Dolby Vision picture on offer here is remarkable in places - crisp and clean, like it was filmed yesterday. A truly great job of transferring. Well done, Paramount. As for the film itself - mehhh. Very slow, light in dialogue and action. Every scene is are leisurely and drawn out. Drags a bit in places.

This is the original Star Trek movie director’s cut presented in 4K Dolby Atmos. It is just an absolute feast for the eyes and ears, and also an incredible science fiction story uniting the original cast in their first motion picture outing. Absolutely brilliant! A truly cinematic spectacle that we can now enjoy in digital format on our big 4K television or our iPads or IPhones.

This is the new 4K version we all wanted with a thumping Dolby atmos soundtrack to boot. This is the definitive edition of this film and it is beautiful! This is Star Trek at its most cerebral. Asking questions about the role of self and our place in the universe. Paramount spent a fortune on this film back in the day from the sets to the models and it shows. With this upgraded edition to the directors original vision for the film, it looks truly amazing. If you like films such as 2001 a space odyssey then you will love this film. My only minor gripe with this film is that they couldn’t get rid of the smearing effect of the background in some scenes. It looks like they smeared grease on the camera lens to blur the background and it’s not a good look. Thankfully it’s only in a few scenes and the rest of the film looks amazing! I cannot rate this version enough. Enjoy.

Absolutely fantastic new transfer, looks and sounds so much better than the 4K Theatrical release. Some nice new extras which is a nice addition as is the included Theatrical cut which is also shown in 4KDV. To those moaning about not receiving a 4K upgrade on their previous purchase, you only get 4K upgrades on HD purchases which the directors edition was only ever available previously in SD hence no free upgrade.

Most of the reviews on here are moaning about it being in SD. That was before the 4K edition was released recently. This is by far my favourite of the Star Trek movies, made even better in this directors cut. It looks amazing in 4K with a Dolby Atmos soundtrack. Comes with some superb extras at a bargain price compared to the physical disc. Buy, enjoy and live long and prosper 🖖

Brought this film a few years back and I would give it 5 stars as for Apple I give 1 star Apple seem to think it’s fair not to automatically upgrade this film to the version with the extras unless you pay another £7.99 which I did I then wrote to Apple requesting a refund and asked why no automatic upgrade I got no answer They refunded my £7.99 and downgraded my film back the the original with no Dolby Atmos etc A multimillion pound company cheating its customers Over the years I’ve brought nearly 500 films No longer !!!!
  • Outstanding version just another purchase!

So if you buy the theatrical version you get the 4K version of that film but HD of the directors edition. But if you buy the directors edition you get the HD version of the theatrical version. Sounds like you end up paying out twice if your a 4K geek. That’s the first niggle out of the way… the film itself is a massive upgrade on the 4K theatrical version. The audio being Dolby Atmos is beautiful and outstanding. The detail on the enterprise is amazing. Without spoiling the opening titles has had a makeover too / lick of paint. Probably one of the best transfers I’ve seen considering the age.

  • Directors cut is not HD for good reasons

Why is the director's cut not HD? Because the effects were made for the video release and so are at a lower resolution. The extra effects would have to be completely redone for an HD release. This is the film that began the Star Trek movie series, but it's about as different from all the later movies as you could get. It's a slow moving, ponderous film which sci-fi purists will enjoy but action fans may be disappointed.
