Just bought this and it came along with the directors edition in the extras. Prefer the original. The glossy special effects still look great after all this time. Pity the story is dull.

I was extremely bored throughout this film and I decided to watch Star Wars instead, an overall dull and rather heartless film. Would recommend the other Star Trek films.

The special fx were really cool and Ilia was totally amazing. I didn't like Decker's outfit though, it looked like a ballet outfit. The beginning was quite boring but the bit when the people sort of dissolved in the transporter was well cool/gory. All in all a brill film!!

Well what can I say? Glorious visual effects and the music is stunning. The story remains very loyal to the Trek ethos and the characters are very well drawn. However, it could have cut down a little on the establishing shots and had slightly more dialogue. But a great Star Trek film, and you can't call yourself a true Trekkie unless you've seen this.

This is a sci fi movie with a very different agenda to Star Wars. This in my opinion compensated for a lot of bad sci fi ideas of that era. Apart from Star Wars, Close encounters and Alien, there was some turkey's out there, especially on the tv networks in the 70's. This is a rich, emotional and powerful piece of cinema which requires patience and understanding. The Jerry Goldsmith score is astonishing!

Star Trek TMP was released in 1979 to capitalise on the sci fi boom it had been in the pipeline at Paramount ever since the cancellation of the original series 10 years before it may have been a gamble to release it at the time but it was still a succsessful movie in it's own merit .Yes it isn't in your face and it may not be everyones idea of a sci fi movie but it is visually a stunning piece of work excellent special effects and Jerry Goldsmiths music score make up for the films long winded plot .For a die hard Star Trek fan it does sit nicely in the franchise as a big opener the performances from William Shatner Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelley Stephen Collins and the late Persis Khambatta are plausible but the rest of the acting is kind of lacklusture I enjoyed it but The Wrath Of Khan is the best of all the movies put together

This film is awesome. A visual feast for the eyes and musical feast for the ears. Yeah it ain't meant for todays Kids .. but I first saw this film when I was 5 and LOVED it, and have loved it ever since. So you can't tell me kids can never get into it, it's just a film that requires you to actually watch it and pay attention. (Yes you need an attention span greater than waiting for the next boom to come along). Personally I think this film is just a giant amongst visually artistic movies. It's not mean't to be a roller coaster action adventure. It's a deep, meaningful and beautiful exploration. I can understand people finding this movie boring .. in the same way that some people just can't sit through 2001: a space odyssey. Star Trek TMP is in a similar vain. I find it amazing that people find this hard to watch though it's just simply stunning. Even todays special FX aren't as lucious as this was. I will qualify myself by saying though that the 'Directors Cut' version of this film IS BETTER. Because the original release of this film was pretty much a rough cut. The directors cut clears up a lot of loose ends and refines the story into a much better experience. This is a film to be taken seriously, it's not a pop-corn, star wars, watch it and forget it kind of movie. This is a film for people who really love to see something very artistic, and definitely THE trek film for anyone who really wants to see the Enterprise look it's best. Not a film for everyone, but for a certain kind of audience this is beautiful feast for your eyes and ears.
