Having been informed it was an inspiration american sports classic, it came from a refreshingly down to earth angle with a much more realistic depiction of high school sport. With far more complex character relationships than most feel good films this is a real sportsman's film!

Grittier than some of the more feel-good/american propaganda sports films, this story and how it is told will resonate with anyone who has ever had to deliver under pressure. The rounding out of the players' characters into individuals we can relate to is subtle and appropriately without fanfare, leaving room for the personal perspective of the viewer. It is also a strong study of small town american life in the days before commonly available global information. And it totally got my blood pumping...and I can't be bothered with football...so that says a lot!
  • They're better sport films out there.

Can't say I was too impressed. Thorton does not energize in the lead role or deliver any classic inspirational / motivational speeches. The story does paint a very good picture of small town dreams and the importance of "high school ball" in those towns but I didn't grow to care for the characters. The game footage is very good and you get a "feel" for the action but I wouldn't say the story is uplifting or inspiring. Search out the "usual suspects" listed above for that.
