Description

Max (Jamie Foxx) is a cab driver who hopes to some day open his own limo company; one night behind the wheel begins promisingly when he picks up Annie (Jada Pinkett Smith), an attorney working with the federal government who is attractive, friendly, and gives him her business card after paying her fare. Max thinks his luck is getting even better when his next fare, Vincent (Tom Cruise), offers him several hundred dollars in cash if he'll be willing to drop him off, wait, and pick him up at five different spots over the course of the evening. Max agrees, but he soon realizes Vincent isn't just another guy with errands to run — Vincent is an assassin who has been paid to murder five people who could put the leaders of a powerful drug trafficking ring behind bars in an upcoming trial. As circumstances force Max to do Vincent's bidding, the cabbie has to find a way to prevent Vincent from killing again and save his own skin, a task that becomes especially crucial when he discovers Annie is one of the names on Vincent's hit list.

Whatever it was that Tom switched on, or switched off, for this movie - it worked. There's no dramatic floppy hair or dramatic shouty bits where he says how much he loves her etc - it's just psychopathic menace and stillness from Tom as he efficiently kills everyone who gets in his way. Worth the money for the scene in the club alone where Tom really is brutal. The ending needs to change though, forget Knight and Day or Mission Impossible, Tom needs to reload this one.

I'm not a big fan of Tom Cruise to be completely honest with you, in no small part due to his association with America's cult of Scientology, but this is, quite simply put, the best perfomance of his acting career. He is effective and convincing as the cold, calculating, uncompromising killer, dispatching his victims to the nether world with a touch of arrogance and class. So, yes, the plot is a little, to say the least, confused and the supposed clash of personalities, with Vincent as the quick-thinking impulsive individual and Max as the control freak who has to plan and map out every aspect of his life, doesn't really work. In essence though, the whole thing works very well and is really worth watching, especially for fans of Michael Mann's other foremost work Heat. Look out for Javier Bardem's hard-to-spot cameo as the drug-dealing gangster, Felix.
