Description

Before The Great Gatsby, Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge and Australia came Strictly Ballroom, Baz Luhrmann's first full feature film. In this magical comedy, Scott Hastings (Paul Mercurio) is a champion ballroom dancer, but much to the chagrin of the Australian ballroom dance community, Scott believes in dancing 'his own steps'. Fran (Tara Morice) is a beginner dancer and a bit of an ugly duckling who has the audacity to ask to be Scott's partner after his unorthodox style causes his regular partner to dance out of his life. Togehter, these two misfits try to win the Australian Pan Pacific Championships and show the Ballroom Confederation that they are wrong when they say, there are no new steps! With an exceptional cast including the late Bill Hunter, Cia Carides, Barry Otto, Strictly Ballroom celebrates it's 20th Anniversary.

I believe that Psnickity hit the nail on the head with their title. This really sums up the movie that has a great story, great quirky characters and some good songs.

This film sounds really cheesy in the synopsis but actually is a quirky and amusing film that has just about the right balance of being heartwarming and amusing. The characters are really engaging and, while the ending is slightly crazy, it's crazy in a good way. It's one of my favourite dance films.
