Linklater is a genius, this is a gem of a movie, as are the follow ups to this trilogy. Beautiful, innocent and yet surprisingly honestly real. Must see
  • Not As Charming As It Intends

This one relies on the charm of the two characters, and there really are just two characters in it, and i found no charm in them at all. Neither of them is as funny, clever or charming as they imagine themselves to be, and their night in Vienna just did not pass quickly enough for me. Two people just out of adolescence, on a bit of a Gap Year/Inter rail break, flirting and trying to string together meaningful observations on their life so far. Obviously I seem to be in a minority, but I saw nothing of interest in this film at all. The idea of a sequel nearly puts me into a coma. I can’t imagine their next meeting providing any more insights. Or charm.

I should have known u would need to watch before and after to get the full story. Watched both in the hope it got better. It did not. One film could have been made easily.

This film was sooo so beautiful. It has a very basic story line, but if you like romance then you'll love this. I recommend this to 15 and over :) And the guy in this film is funny. There is alot, seriously alot of dialogue compared to drama etc. I liked that because it was very natural and realistic and its the kind of story line that everybody wishes would happen to them some day!!!!!

Good acting but very slow film. I nearly fell asleep. Needed to know if they met again. My opinion not worth watching.
  • Great acting, no action.

The other reviewers are right. The acting is excellent and the dialog is well scripted and natural. Vienna is a nice backdrop to the story. However, absolutely nothing happens. They just walk about, go to a club, drink a beer and talk. There is zero action. Guy meets a girl, they talk a lot, have a minor argument, catch a quick kiss, go their separate ways. I was watching this late at night and I fell asleep half an hour before the end. In real life a guy and a girl might well walk round Vienna talking to each other for hours and then split up without doing anything about it. But in a 1 1/2 hour long movie, real life gets boring, a few more gunshots or a little bit more passion would have helped me stay awake.

Don't be fooled by the corny movie poster. This is a gem of a film with excellent performances by Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. The dialogue seems natural, real and unrehearsed, there is genuine chemistry going on that you can actually feel. Nothing corny or cliché about this film. It only leaves you wanting more. So watch it, and when you're done, grab the sequel Before Sunset. You will not regret it.

This is a fantastic movie for people who enjoy great dialogue and watching developing relationships. A very memorable movie; but once you've seen this, wait a day or two, then sit down and watch the sequel, "Before Sunset". Words cannot describe how amazing these films are, but they do need to be seen together. Highly recommended.

I've watched literally thousands of films over the years. This is in my Top 5. Helped form me as a youngling growing up. Enough said.
