Description

When a suicidal patient reveals that his gambling debt has him at the end of his rope, dedicated psychiatrist Margaret Ford (Crouse) enters into the shadowy underground world of gaming to help him out. At a seedy casino, she boldly confronts Mike (Montegna), the con man who holds her patient's markers. Duped into a high-stakes poker match, Margaret becomes intoxicated by Mike's mastery, as he both cheats at the game and charms her. She quickly falls for him, turning a blind eye to the fact that he's a swindler who can't be trusted. And before long she finds herself sparring in a mental poker match of the heart with deadly consequences!

This is an intriuging film well written, shot and acted. Compared to the faster paced films of more recent years it might feel a little slow but its definatly worth sticking with.
  • A must see film

This is one of the great cult films, admittedly not to everyone's taste because it's somewhat stylised and it shows signs of the stage rather than the screen. It's the writer David Mamet's first go at directing one of his plays for the big screen. No matter. Fellow Chicagoan, Joe Mantegna is consummate in the role of the con man -- darkly charming and believable. You watch the film for him and for the brilliance of Mamet's dialogue rather than for big action or gloss. The film has some faults. The first scenes creak and aren't that well acted. The lady isn't as good as the guy. But who cares? It's moody, intelligent and tense. Watch this and then watch Mamet's other great film 'Homicide' (also starring Mantegna).
