Description

The haunting story of The Giver centres on Jonas (Brenton Thwaites), a young man who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colourless, world of conformity and contentment. Yet as he begins to spend time with The Giver (Jeff Bridges), who is the sole keeper of all the community’s memories, Jonas quickly begins to discover the dark and deadly truths of his community’s secret past. With this newfound power of knowledge, he realizes that the stakes are higher than imagined – a matter of life and death for himself and those he loves most. At extreme odds, Jonas knows that he must escape their world to protect them all – a challenge that no one has ever succeeded at before. Starring Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, Brenton Thwaites, Alexander Skarsgård, Katie Holmes, Odeya Rush and Taylor Swift, The Giver is based on Lois Lowry’s beloved young adult novel of the same name, which was the winner the 1994 Newbery Medal and has sold over 10 million copies worldwide.

Genuinely thought (within first 10 minutes) that this would be ok. Shame, could have been a lot more. Acting pretty poor, Mr Bridges should have been utilised a lot better, finale was deflating.....

Take the most recent dystopian films, mix up the plots in a random way. Add some huge holes in the plot and this is what you get. Mediocre pap.

Not a terrible film but not a brilliant one either. I found myself struggling to get into it at the start, but as it progressed it go better. I found some of the memory scenes quite annoying with the choppy filming style of them and some of the acting could have been a little better. Overall 3 stars from me. Worth a watch if there's nothing else on. I rented it, I wouldn't buy it.

I found out about The Giver from being a Taylor Swift fan. After watching the film I have now become a fan from the beauty and simplicity of the film. I cried watching this film because it makes you aware of the amazing world we live in, good and bad,and shows you how much we take for granted. Over all a great movie that I enjoyed as a 13 year old and anyone else would enjoy at any age.

Overall ok, not a film I would recommend people spend their hard earned cash renting. Filled a bit of time but the plot was weak and it didn't really go anywhere.
  • More like the Taker of My Money

I know let's come up with a story by throwing a whole load of movies in a pot, stir them together and hope for the best. Equilibrium - Take a shot that removes your emotions. Logan's Run - Everyone disappears at a set age. Divergent - everyone belongs to a specific type of role (although why you would copy such a terrible storyline goodness only knows). Demolition Man - No-one lies, everyone is good to each other Stick a few drones into the mix and a mythical barrier that suddenly unleashes memories for everyone, then add Katie Holmes to pretend she is wooden (that she managed all on her own). Finally stick in a couple of big names and hope you have a winner. Unfortunately this movie simply proves that they have run out of ideas and you simply rehash the same ones, with a lame cast and a terrible story. Don't waste your time.
