Description

Want someone to infiltrate a top-secret organization or steal a scientific formula that could change the world? For the right price, The Saint's your man. And if you're looking for a "sexy sizzler of a thriller" (Bill Diehl, ABC Radio Network), The Saint's your movie! Val Kilmer plays suave espionage hero Simon Templar – aka The Saint – and Elisabeth Shue costars in this atmospheric mix of bold adventure and grand romance. An array of sophisticated gadgetry is at Templar's command as he plunges into a cloak-and-dagger netherworld of move and counter-move. Cool, too, is Templar's knack for coming up with the right disguise at the right time. Now you see him. Now you don't... or do you? Each close-call escape is a breathless miracle – and no one knows miracles better than a saint.

This bears no relation to the 60s series of the same name. This Simon Templar has all the panache or an overcooked turnip. Gadgets triumph over wit and charm, it's more Mission Impossible than the Saint. And for once, can we have a portrayal of scientists that bears some relation to actual science. The big speech at the beginning about how much we'd all love this theory to be true couldn't have been more lame unless both its legs dropped off. Wishful thinking does not a scientist make. Watch an episode of the real thing in ITV, much more fun.

Please do not compare this to the original TV series, Val Kilmer is excellent as a modern day Simon Templar, updating a character from the 1960's was never going to be easy, but the film holds its own in style, plot and character. Long overdue on iTunes, this film is good escapist entertainment at its best, what a pity a sequel was never made. The storyline is good and location sequences are excellent both in Oxford and Moscow, as I remember Val Kilmer filming sequences of this movie, close to me in Oxford.
