I thought this film was going to be great; talented actors; great writing and direction. Unfortunately it was awful. It featured Joaquín Phoenix in his worst role ever, as a hideous, coarse excuse of an alcoholic and his terrible descent into oblivion. I thought the performances of Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams and Joaquín Phoenix would make this film enjoyable but the ongoing disintegration of the main character was awful to watch. Would not recommend.

I do sometimes love a bit of an "arty" film. However, the characters in "The Master" are not strong enough to stop it from descending into a pretentious farce. I think the screenplay was written with Daniel Day Lewis in mind for Joaquin Phoenix's role- but I doubt even he could save this film.
  • Great art doesn't always make for a great movie

I watched this, hoping for a great movie experience, it didn't happen. The craft in this film is superb but for all the great cinematography, sound and acting, I somehow just did not manage to engage with the characters in this, there are moments, but they are fleeting. For me the journey here started in desolation and ended in the same place… nothing happened. That is not always a bad thing, but I just didn't care about the characters within this context and for me unless I empathise with the characters a movie somehow falls flat, no matter how beautiful or deep it tries to be.

I was so looking forward to this film and watched it as soon as it became available to download. Magnolia is one of my all time favourites but was left really disappointed by The Master. The acting is amazing, really fantastic. However the film was just so slow and although I think overall it is a fine piece of film making I just found it hard to remain focused. By the end I did start to appreciate the story but overall feel disappointed after hearing so many positive reviews about it when it was released. Be prepared.

Trying to hard to be an interesting film, i guess people are trying to see something arty in this meandering drivel that strangely wallows into the mire of tedium. If i could get a refund please.

Stellar performances all round. This deeply unsettling and memorable film will linger with you for some time. Impactful soundtrack and expertly shot.

A really well put together film, with fantastic acting, and one that i really wanted to like, but it just didnt have enough of a story to keep me interested. Maybe it's my fault for not understanding what point the director was trying to make - I've certainly been trying.
  • Too strange

Very long film that tries to be too "arty". It's a film that I'm sure Phoenix deserves credit for because of his theatrical performance. But in my opinion, any enjoyment possible was sapped out of the movie by what can only be described as a strange script. It's just very odd, slow and boring. I had to watch the film in 3 parts as I became so bored.

Quite simply the most interesting and wonderfully crafted film of the last few years.

The best film of 2012. Incredible performances from Hoffman and Phoenix. PTA is a genius.
