Description

Considered among the best films of all time, Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver was nominated for Academy Awards® for Best Picture, Best Actor (Robert De Niro), Best Supporting Actress (Jodie Foster) and Best Original Score (Bernard Herrmann). Solitary, alienated, and emotionally scarred from Vietnam, taxi driver Travis Bickle (De Niro) works the night shift in Manhattan.Though the world around him is teeming with life, Travis is unable to connect with anyone. His date with Betsy (Cybill Shepherd), a beautiful campaign aide, fails when he takes her to a porno movie. He tries to save a 12-year-old prostitute, Iris (Foster), from her pimp, Sport (Harvey Keitel) - though it's unclear Iris wants to be saved. Travis's pent-up anger and misplaced loyalty finally boil over in a paroxysm of revenge and violence.

  • What’s all the fuss about

Can’t understand why this film is so highly rated, was left disappointed and frankly bored. Without spoiling the story, he hardly appeared scarred from Vietnam, and even if he was it was slow, no real drama, and even though he appeared like a vigilante the end didn’t make sense. I know this is an old film but it’s pace was like a snail, with no real surprises and to be frank, prison was the outcome but he appeared happy and without remorse and even if say happy, when supposedly scarred.

Like most titles, you can buy this for £3 cheaper elsewhere. I’ve bought many films on here but may have to start looking for another option. The film by the way is okay but not really the masterpiece it’s made out to be

Taxi Driver is one of the best films ever made. This is one of those films that you do not get tired of seeing and every time you watch it you realize a little detail that you have not seen before. Excellent actors, a good director, an impressive soundtrack and a real story are the main appeals of this film. At the end of the film the character makes real his most violent fantasies, with a look of certain soldiers from Vietnam, and he behaves like this because of his loneliness, his alienation and because he does not find any sense to his life. The violent behaviour becomes Travis into a hero, although he had killed many people and he could do it again. Although he acts with an extreme violence the spectator understand him and the reasons why he acts that way. The soundtrack of the film, which is composed by Bernard Herrmann, inspires some kind of loneliness and sometimes it is absolutely terrifying like in a horror film. This film has the privilege of having made famous the sentence ‘You talking' to me? You talking' to me?' which will remain in the history of cinema. This is an authentic masterpiece!

The best film of all time! Martin Scorsese's visceral and painful character study is amongst the powerful and thought provoking piece's of art ever. It stars Robert De Niro at his intense best as depressed ex-marine Travis Bickle who becomes a night time taxi driver to combat his insomnia. He's spiral down to insanity is fuelled by the social "scum" around him and his own social exclusion. The cinematography from one of the most revolutionary in the industry Michael Chapman ranges like Bickle's own mood and mind set. When he temporally founds a purpose as he is enthralled by the vapid but ethereal Betsy (Cybill Shepherd), the beautiful colours of New York are highlighted stunningly. Upon his rejection the grungy nature of New York our more prominent. It's apparently unnoticeable factors such as this that make it a Golden Palm winner. As the film develops Bickle becomes more disturbed and plans to kill a political candidate. The film ends with his ultimate redemption but shakes a moral compass so much we question if he is a villain or an anti-hero. Even though it captures the zeitgeist of the state of America in the 70's perfectly it is relatable to nearly everyone even now. Because it's theme's of isolation, loneliness, rejection contain a universal truth that speaks to nearly everyone regardless of whether you live in New York the U.S.
