Description

Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning star in Academy Award winner Sofia Coppola's witty and moving story about the special bond between a father and his daughter. Actor Johnny Marco (Dorff) is leading the fast-paced lifestyle of a tabloid celebrity. He’s comfortably numb with his life of women and pills when his 11-year-old daughter, Cleo (Fanning), unexpectedly arrives at his room at Hollywood’s legendary Chateau Marmont hotel. Their time together encourages Johnny to re-question his life in ways he never expected.

Very dull... I thought perhaps they called it somewhere because somewhere in the film would be a story.... Alas no... They should've called it nowhere... Or pointless.

Started watching expecting something good. I ended up fast forwarding it to the end. Nearly nodded off.

A very poor film on all accounts, not least the script and plot which does not contain a single event or a single memorable line or quote. I understand the pretence behind S.Coppola's direction but in order to make a dry, introspective and life-like script work, we the viewer must invest SOME interest or empathy or even distain in the main character and unfortunately for this film, watching a spoilt rockstar baby drive about in a sports car makes it very hard for a viewer to make any emotional attachment whatsoever. It almost feels unfinished or rushed in production. Go watch Paris, Texas which was the real inspiration for this genre of cinema to see how it's really done.

Sometimes it's not what you say.. but what you don't say.

Typical Sofia Coppola fare. The movie is beautifully shot with great colour tones on the photography to suit the mood and feel. The relationship between the father and daughter characters is well developed and believable - she is the adult in the relationship. It is slow paced with the feeling of emptiness and aimlessness but that's the point surely. It doesn't bother me that the Johnny Marco isn't particularly someone you care for, I don't buy that you always need to care for the character. In fact I like that they don't take that soft option. Also Elle Fanning is one of the best actors around today (of not just young actors but any age).

This is a beautifully crafted film with poignant moments, like in French movies where the shot just lingers.... Well worth watching if you like 'real' cinema. One of my all time favourites.

It's style over content this. Enjoyed it for Elle Fanning who it's really all about. The vacuous character played by SD could be fleshed out more; and as a result the audience won't really be interested in him. So the chemistry is off balance. The sycophancy that surrounds hollywood 'types' has become a cliché pretty much. So what you see is kinda boring. The writing of the scripy should have been tighter to ellicit sympathy for the 'fallen'. The soundtrack (as with all of Lady Coppola's movies) is excellent and would be worth owning. But this outing is forgetable. But in this post modern world I think that was her point. But you know we all want to be entertained. the scene with Elle Fanning ice skating was beautiful. She's at the age moving from girl to teenager and back again. How this melts SD's heart....Remember the quality of Lost in Translation. There's none of that here.

This is not an action film or a story film or a super hero film. So some may struggle with it. But it conveys the challenge and the emptiness of experience. Dorff is extruded across the length of the film. There are great shots and great lines "I'm the other one." And a vibe that connects. There is a searching throughout the film. A sense that when he says he wants to find more, at the end, that he has earned the line. Please understand this film is probably not for you today, but sometime it will be and then you will know.

As much as I love art house films, this is a case of the emperors new clothes! Slow can be powerful, insightful, poignant but this was just dull. A slow trudge. Obviously films don't have to have guns or fast cars or explosions - I can even live without narrative, but to strip out character, development, cinematic eye? What are you left with? A lost afternoon. Even a crass blockbuster is honest in it's lack of vision.
