Description

Written and directed by Academy Award winner Sofia Coppola (2003, Best Writing, Lost In Translation), Marie Antoinette is an electrifying yet intimate re-telling of the turbulent life of history's favorite villainess. Kirsten Dunst portrays the ill-fated child princess who married France's young and indifferent King Louis XVI (Jason Schwartzman). Feeling isolated in a royal court rife with scandal and intrigue, Marie Antoinette defied both royalty and commoner by living like a rock star, which served only to seal her fate.

It never becomes clear what Coppola’s intentions are not over what feels like a long two hours.

Although this film is pretty light on story, almost an impossibility given the subject matter, it makes up for it by being absolutely gorgeous to look at. I'd recommend reading Antonia Frasers biography first and using this simply as a chance to glimpse the opulence and beauty she describes. Lovely.

I have just rented it and the download stopped halfway! I have only 2 days to watch it but I can't because it won't let me and iTunes have took my money!
  • Surprisingly dull

Dull, the film transitions from "yankee at the court of Louis XV" through a series of clumsy pastiches to its obvious conclusion without any sense of plot or character development

This film certainly gave balance to our traditional and very two-demensional view of Marie-Antoinette - all we know is that she said (and not even that is true!) 'Let them eat cake!' So here is a teenager sent out of her country, never to return, stripped, literally, of everything connected to her Austrian life, down to her companion dog. She is wedded to a young man she has never met before, who is obsessed by locks and refuses to consummate the marriage, inspite of pressures from every direction and the ritual of putting them to bed by the court and waking them (or often just M-A) in the morning. Just her crime of not being French, talking with a foreign accent added to her husband's complete disinterest in her lead to deep unhappiness and indeed desperation which she then deals with by indulging in art and, when children finally come, the idyllic country life of Le Petit Trianon. But this world where every whim is indulged is seriously out of touch with the people of France who are struggling in desperate poverty. It can't last. And the film ends. We know where the story goes, and it is messy and ugly. The last scenes are of the pure and enormous 'gardens' at Versailles. The film is full of beauty: I think it would be more complete if we saw the Les Miserables side as well, but of course running time is limited. I highly recommend it if you want to understand this slice of European history better. Certainly for me, recently arrived in France, it is very interesting.

Film is good, but you're listing it as 99p, it costs £1.99!!
  • A bit disappointing

There's not really much plot here, and more time seems to be spent on scenes of the actresses walking upstairs rather than of major moments in Marie Antoinettes life. I felt the ending was also quite disappointing.
  • Rent it if u have a lot of time to waist

Slow, dull, boring with no recreation of the history only demonstration of feast, food and colours.

Mediocre modern movie in costume dress with no sense of period. not a bad thing. however most viewers probably like their history films like barry lyndon / tom jones / the duellists. there's a whimsy here that doesn't ever work inspite of the lavish look. and some of the dialogue M.A. was not that naive.
