Description

Following the murder of her father by hired hand Tom Chaney, 14-year-old farm girl Mattie Ross sets out to capture the killer. To aid her, she hires the toughest U.S. marshal she can find, a man with "true grit," Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn. Mattie insists on accompanying Cogburn, whose drinking, sloth, and generally reprobate character do not augment her faith in him. Against his wishes, she joins him in his trek into the Indian Nations in search of Chaney. They are joined by Texas Ranger LaBoeuf, who wants Chaney for his own purposes. The unlikely trio find danger and surprises on the journey, and each has his or her "grit" tested.

  • Probably a good translation of the book.

A movie packed with great actors pulling off very honest, believable performances but this movie is just not very entertaining. I am sure this version (as opposed to the John Wayne version) is a better interpretation of the book but I did not feel very engaged or interested in the storyline. Three stars is the best I can come up with.

I’m old enough to have seen the original and the Coen brothers remake, both in the cinema. The original was an iconic movie for John Wayne, so, tackling a remake would not be an easy thing to do. The scenery in the original was more beautiful. Here it is deliberately more stark. There are some key scenes to compare: The court scene pays more attention to detail and has the edge in this movie. The scene between Steinfeld and the horse trader also just has the edge as does her first encounter with the Texas Ranger; very witty. The climactic action scene in the original didn’t work for me. The distances between Wayne and the villains he rode at simply didn’t work. In this movie it is far better with appropriate distance in which the main protagonists charge at each other. Nevertheless, both are truly great movies with the recent one being one of the best of the last few years. Bridges gives a terrific performance as Rooster Cogburn and the rest of the cast, particularly Steinfeld, are great. Even those who don’t care for Westerns should like this movie.

The young girl has real presence and the cast is amazing. Well done for such a great film. Such a shame she couldn't meet them both at the end.

This film was very dark and gritty unlike the original, making it unique in its own way, meaning that the film got the western vibe that it needed. The Coen brothers never seem to disappoint.

Good film, however the original was better, also why do remakes if they are not going to reach the potential as the original. I say this because the original one with John Wayne won an Oscar but this one did not!! It annoys me cause it would seem to be pointless
