Description

When a crew of the FBI’s most wanted criminals rent rooms at a New Orleans bed and breakfast to carry out a very detailed and precise heist robbery, they realize that no amount of planning could take into account the elderly eccentric landlady who foils them at every turn. Tom Hanks has been cast as a thief in this film along with Marlon Wayans ('Scary Movie'). Dark comedy remake by the Coen Brothers ('Fargo', 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?'). Barry Sonnenfeld ('Men In Black', 'Get Shorty') serves as a producer on the project. This is a remake of the 1955 British Ealing comedy of the same name starring Sir Alec Guinness and Peter Sellers. Tom Hanks is playing the professor role that Guinness played in the original.

Most waste time spent watching something worse than paint dry, I love Tom Hanks and like someone else has stated what was he thinking...... not worth renting, unless you like boredom, wouldn't recommend, unless you can get it for free to kill time.

A good story is worth retelling. The original is a classic and available on bluray, the Coen brother's effort perhaps does not reach classic status but nonetheless I enjoyed it. The characters were over the top as they should be, I thought it held together very well, lots of smiles if not belly-laughs. Don't get uptight about comparing it to the original, enjoy it for what it is.

As a lifelong fan of ealing comedies and a lover of the original I rented this film with a great predisposition to criticize it. Bolstered by the remakes like "The Italian job" and others I had avoided watching it in the past. My reverence for the original, a prejudice towards American remakes of British classics and their complete lack of understanding of " Englishness" only served to confirm my abstinence . Against my better judgment and due to the Coen brothers name , lack of time and an imminent flight I rented it . Well...... In this case my better judgment was wrong! This film is beautifully crafted, it has subtlety, it is wonderfully dark but without any of the usual american overkill. Made with great sensitivity and respect for the sensibility of the original. The performances have that wonderful Coen surrealism and are perfectly executed. The casting is perfect ,the cinematography is wonderful and the direction is subtle and allows the story to breath and have a life of it's own. And I almost forgot......it's funny! This film will go into my desert island list...

Very disappointing remake of a British classic. Was expecting much much better from the Coen Brothers. Most of the dialogue - apart from a considerable amount of swearing - is inaudible or incomprehensible. A complete waste of time- one of the worst films I've ever seen.

I like the Cohen brothers movies but this one is not nearly as clever or as funny as all their others in my opinion. A bit if a miss for them.
