Description

Academy Award®-winning directors Joel and Ethan Coen return to their comedy roots with this original and darkly humorous story about one ordinary man’s quest to become a serious man. Physics professor Larry Gopnik (Michael Stuhlbarg) can’t believe his life: His wife is leaving him for his best friend, his unemployed brother won’t move off the couch, someone is threatening his career, his kids are a mystery and his neighbor is tormenting him by sunbathing nude. Struggling to make sense of it all, Larry consults three different rabbis and their answers lead him on a twisted journey of faith, family, delinquent behavior and mortality in the film critics rave is “seriously awesome!” (Michael Hogan, Vanity Fair)

A promising start and some interesting characters. But interesting characters and some good performances aren't enough to carry this film. It's self indulgent and as for the ending - what ending?

Why it is under comedy is beyond me. . . As a study of a jewish family (very stereotypical) and a man having a mid life crisis it's fair enough and it's nicely shot etc. . . . but really it does not do what it says on the tin at all and frankly I didn't even finish watching it as it was that bad. . . Complete waste of money.

I am not a film critic, but i love good acting. This film has a great storyline and the humour is subtle but brilliant. The acting is brilliant and the characters are great. It is Jewish humour at its best. Well worth buying.

The film is going to be terrible if you come at it from a mainstream perspective. It's a bit or an 'arty film,' it's not that funny, but it's just to evoke thought and to bring something new and odd like the Coen Brothers so frequently do.
  • Their worst film yet. And you know it.

Anyone who deems this film worthy of five stars is a pretentious fool. It had some funny lines, an interesting theme, but no really interesting characters or ANY sense of direction. IT WASN'T ENJOYABLE. I think some people claim they like it because A. Its Coen brothers, and B. most people don't like it. A massive dissappointment. And what was going on with the opening?

people who have jobs as film critics are simliar to fashion stylists. You look at what they wear and laugh most of the time. Anyone who is boring enough to have watched this whole film without shooting themselves needs a medal.
  • Masterpiece!

This movie was so well crafted and so brilliantly written, it just kept me on the edge of my chair right through. It's comedy, but way too dark to draw real laughs. Its darkness is exquisite, though. Brilliant cast!

I love the Coens, but i've given up on them the way that I have with Tim Burton. I wonder which audience, if any, they wish to speak to? This film alienated me right from the start and just kept going. A protagonist that is weak to the point of annoyance. Maybe I just don't get it, but this may be the last Coen film i watch.
