Academy Award winners Julie Christie and George C. Scott star in the story of a love affair between two very different people set against the cultural revolution rocking late 1960s San Francisco. When recently divorced, successful doctor Archie Bollen (Scott) meets free-spirited Petulia Danner (Christie), who's newly wed to a wealthy but abusive husband (Richard Chamberlain) the two find themselves inexorably attracted. But Archie's inability to break free of his sterile, emotionally protected life clashes with Petulia's yearning for the material safety her husband's wealth provides--even as both struggle to escape the stifling lives in which they are trapped.
