Description

Producer David O. Selznick’s acclaimed screen adaptation of Margaret Mitchell’s best-selling novel tells of the romance between the tempestuous Scarlett O’Hara (Vivien Leigh) and the dashing Rhett Butler (Clark Gable), against the tragic backdrop of the Civil War. This legendary classic earned 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actress, (Leigh) Best Director (Victor Fleming), and Best Supporting Actress to Hattie McDaniel, the first Oscar ever awarded to an African American performer.  One of the highest-grossing films of all time (when adjusted for inflation), it is also very much a product of its time, and unfortunately reflects depictions of characters and themes which are offensive and problematic when viewed by contemporary audiences. The film is presented here as originally released in 1939, because to do otherwise would be the equivalent of stating the prejudices and attitudes never existed.

Probably the best movie ever, Scarlett is such a mood. The preview was made in 1939 so yunno chill out guys. Unless u wanna wake them from their death bed and ask to remake it.

To answer the question raised of format, this film was made in 1.37:1, standard for the time, so it’s not ‘widescreen’, and not supposed to be.

Great classic epic but if any movie should be in widescreen this should - but isn't here. Also some of the extras are the poorer youtube quality

The first time I saw this was on the 50th anniversary vhs edition which was washed out, loss of colour and detail. For example just after the first encounter of rhett and scarlet at twelve oaks there was a shot of a clock with an old saying about squandering time. The vhs was so poor you could not see a cat sleeping below the clock in HD you can see that there was not only one but 2 cats beneath the clock. I not it may seem petty but HD works extremely well for classics from Hollywood's golden age. I grew on on movies like Jurassic park, these cgi movies cannot compare to true movies from the era gone.with the wind was made. I heard a rumour of a remake which I hope just remains a rumour.

I almost never give 5 stars to any film no matter how good other reviews are. This however is 1 of the finest movies ever made. The search for the actress to play Scarlet is in itself legend and the choice of Vivien Leigh was inspired. With Clark Gable as Rhett Butler fully supported by the remaining cast. It is in essence a love story but much of the story takes place pre, during and post American civil war 1862/65. This is acting at its finest and the burning of Atlanta by Union Forces is spectacular and shot long before CGI was invented. For me a must.

Very lazy work in setting up the preview for this film. I-tunes are shooting them selves in the foot by not making more of an effort and I will make the same effort by not purchasing until I see what I am spending my money on!

The preview for this film is a waste of time - I like to see the quality of a film before I purchase. All this clip provides is opening titles. This is an old film, and if the iTunes version of Downton Abbey Season 2 is such poor quality, and it's brand new, how can I trust that this will be any good without a decent preview. 1 star for iTunes, 5 stars for the film.
