Description

Elliott Gould portrays tough private-eye Philip Marlowe in director Robert Altman's updated version of one of Raymond Chandler's most-celebrated novels... Marlowe is awakened at 3:30 in the morning by part-time hood Terry Lennox (Jim Bouton) to drive him to Tijuana. When Marlowe returns to Los Angeles, he learns that Lennox's wife is dead--murdered--and that (of course!) Lennox is the chief suspect. Marlowe returns to his normal work and is hired by a woman to find her husband, Roger (Sterling Hayden), an author with a fondness for the bottle. More puzzles... The mob turns up; they are seeking $350,000--and they seem to think Marlowe has it! He will soon learn of Lennox's death (murder, suicide or...) in Mexico and realize that no one but himself gives a damn. That will make Marlowe VERY angry...

I'm two for two of literally falling asleep during this film. It's hard to stay tuned in to a film that seems so uninterested in its characters. While I like McCabe and Mrs Miller, love M.A.S.H. and have Shortcuts in my all time top ten, I think this is drivel. The dialogue seems poorly improvised and the dubbing is painful. By all means watch it, twice, if you haven't seen it. I only thought I would provide healthy some counterpoint to a critically venerated film.

Most critics while argue that Nashville or Macabe and Mrs Miller, or even Short Cuts was Altman's best film, but for me it's this one all the way. Gould outclasses Bogart in every way as Marlowe and makes you love this really quite sneaky and pathetic man. A 100%, cast iron, must see.

What a movie! Brilliant!!! Elliot Gould is at his chain smoking slouchy best. Great script, brilliant performances and sensational direction from a legend. There is even a non talking cameo from a huge Arnold Swarzeneggar. This film does stand the test of time and is great. Concentrate however when watching as the plot is a thick one with many twists... Well done iTunes, more like this please.
