Description

From William Goldman's best-selling novel comes one of the most daring and affecting thrillers ever brought to the screen. Oscar winner Dustin Hoffman (Rainman) plays the likeable graduate student and marathon runner of the title, unwillingly trapped in a killing game of intrigue involving a Nazi fugitive, Christian Szell. Laurence Olivier received an Academy Award nomination for his chilling portrayal of the sadistic Szell, who turns dental instruments into tools of torture with dispassionate ease. Directed by John Schlesinger and featuring an all-star cast, Marathon Man moves with nail-biting suspense to its thrilling, fever-pitched conclusion. Co-starring Roy Scheider and William Devane.

I saw this on it’s cinema release having read William Goldman’s book. The book is great, the movie very good. I actually thought Dustin Hoffman was miscast in the lead role. Nevertheless, he and Laurence Olivier lead a fine cast. The involved storyline weaves diamonds stolen by the Nazi’s, international intrigue and Hoffman’s character and personal history together very well. Olivier gives a chilling performance as the post war Nazi and Roy Scheider is great as the American agent. A fine cast, lot’s of tension and action but built upon a good story. Well worth watching.

It's a great movie and I'd never seen it before buying it on iTunes. I wish I'd just rented it, coz as good as it is, it's not the kind of film you need to see more than a couple of times in a lifetime, although I would definately recommend watching it once! :-)
