  • Not a patch on Manhunter

Aside from its 80’s foibles, what made Manhunter a great film was its dark, sharp, moody atmosphere. Here Edward Norton and Ralph Fiennes sleepwalk their way through the book and the film in a remake that “had” to be made given the success of Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal. Whereas Manhunter treats the viewer with a degree of intellect and respect, Red Dragon spoon-feeds us clues that we can work out for ourselves. However, the biggest let down was Ralph Fiennes’s, Francis Dolarhyde. Tom Noonan’s shoes were a big ask to fill, but I can’t help but feel that he was found wanting in this role. Brian Cox played a great Hannibal Lector and so does Anthony Hopkins, also if you haven’t seen Manhunter then you’ll enjoy this film as a yarn, sadly those of us who were great fans of the original, feel distinctly let down by this "prequel by numbers.” On a foot note, when on earth is Manhunter coming to UK iTunes? It has been available on the US iTunes for ages.

Anthony Hopkins returns in Red Dragon as Dr Hannibal Lecter, who is conficted of murder and cannibalism. Will graham a retired fbi agent with a history with hannibal is called back to catch the tooth fairy or the red dragon. He is a schitzophrenic with years of abuse from his grandmother, which has turned him into a serial killer. Exxcellent! Must buy movie, kept me chilled throughout late at night i couldnt fall asleep after! Very powerful and psychological but a wicked movie.

The Red Dragon is one incredible thriller, it is the prequel to The Silence Of The Lambs and a remake of the classic Manhunter. Anthony Hopkins plays the brilliant but psychotic cannibal known as Dr Hannibal Lecter. The film starts with the capture of Hannibal by FBI Agent Will Graham, played by Edward Norton, in a bloody fight that leaves both Hannibal and Will in critical condition. But seven years later, after Will Graham had been retired from the FBI he is asked back to help so a new serial killer case. The killer known in the press as 'The Tooth Fairy' or to himself 'The Red Dragon', and played by the brilliant Ralph Fiennes, brutally murders whole families and their pets. The Red Dragon is psychotic and deranged after years of abuse from his grandmother, he inserts broken pieces of glass into his victims to make them become 'alive' again. But to help in the case he goes back to the person who nearly killed him, Hannibal Lecter. This is one of the best thriller films i have seen, maybe apart from Silence Of The Lambs. It is gory, it is disturbing, it is shocking, but it is a great psychological thriller. As part of the Hannibal Saga, fans of Silence Of The Lambs and Hannibal need to try this film. I love my horror and thriller films and this is one of the best. Anthony Hopkins always delivers as the creepy, but likeable, Hannibal Lecter. Ralph Fiennes shows us his deranged psycho side as the disturbed killer the Red Dragon. All the cast are incredilbe, the story couldn't be any better and the film ends where Silence Of The Lambs begins. This is a must see film! The Hannibal Saga. Hannibal Rising - Red Dragon/Manhunter - Silence Of The Lambs - Hannibal.
