Description

Take a luxurious, privately-owned 747 jumbo jet full of VIP's. Load it with a cargo of priceless art treasures and send it flying over the hazardous Bermuda Triangle. Add a few desperate hijackers for good measure and you've got the makings of one of the most harrowing adventure stories ever put on film! James Stewart is the philanthropic owner of the doomed plane and Jack Lemmon is the fearless pilot risking death at every turn in an attempt to save the luxury airliner when it is skyjacked and sent crashing to the ocean's floor.     And yes, it's the silliest of them all. Which makes it a must-see for fans of the genre. There's little point in an "Airport" movie, after all, if it doesn't stretch credulity beyond breaking point. The special effects are good for the time, if not quite in Star Wars territory, as the usual array of (almost-but-not-quite) Big Hollywood Stars are put at risk of life and limb when an art heist gone wrong results in their 747 'landing on water', as pre-take off safety announcements say. They won't need to remember how to tie up their lifejackets though, as the plane miraculously sinks intact... Of the seventies disaster movies, only The Poseidon Adventure and (arguably) The Towering Inferno had any dramatic heart. The remainder were brain-dead thrill rides - and Airport '77 was one of the best. Go on, you know you want to.
