Description

A pair of astronauts heads to Jupiter to investigate a radio signal sent from a mysterious monolith on the moon, but their tranquil trip is endangered when their on-board computer begins acting oddly. The simple plot of director Stanley Kubrick's inspired space adventure (co-scripted with noted science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke) belies the profound philosophical implications of this classic film, which inspires viewers to ask questions about the nature of advanced civilizations . . . and of human consciousness. Nearly half a century after its release, the film's groundbreaking special effects are still breathtaking, and its ending still mind-bending.

I watched this film and was expecting much more from it. No real story, character development or dramatic content. A least the classical music is nice and the effects were fine but the only real surprise for me was a small role for Leonard Rossiter.

“I thought 2001, which was many decades ago now, was a very fine film, very authentic in terms of the way space looks and the way vehicles move and trajectories and so on. Many of the more recent space fiction movies have much less realism than 2001 did....” per the late Neil Armstrong in his NASA Oral history (at page 96)

There might be more purely entertaining films but 2001 is like visual poetry. Nothing beats seeing a 70mm print but now in 4K it is simply sublime. By far, the most important, daring and impressive film ever.

So much already said about this film, no film lover’s collection can be without it. A masterpiece. Now in 4K at last, and a free upgrade from Apple if previously purchased from iTunes. Perfection!

The 4K bluray is now out. Would love to see 2001 in glorious HDR 4K but I guess they will leave it some time to make money from the physical disc sale first.
