I couldn't care less whether a movie has a happy or sad ending - this is the thinking man's edit. Instead of the same lame good vs. evil story you've seen a million times (and in the original cut of this film), this ending actually makes you stop and think about humanity's role in the world. Heaven forbid a movie would promote nuanced thinking.

I enjoyed the Vincent Price B movie and I loved the Charlton Heston version but both are very dated. This version had nothing going for it except the car and now tagging a happy ending on because America likes their happy endings has completely killed an already mediocre re-remake. Good sci-fi films are few and far between and the best have cynical unhappy endings. Hollywood fails to see this and tags on happy endings. In the case of this film, who cares because it is pretty much awful anyway!

How can u give this overrated film and its overrate actor such good ratings . It's boring long winded self indulgent crap

i was initially cynical about watching this but now glad that i did. it turns out to be a much better film with the alt. ending in my opinion and now has much more depth and extra meaning. it isn't just an excuse for a disney style happy ending as much as giving the viewer a more thought provoking reflection afterwards. it also explains one major scene in the original that viewers were left guessing about; what , how and why did will smith end up getting snared...anyway it's a thumbs up from me ;)

The ending on this one is lame.

I like this ending much better only because it shows us the dark seekers aren't mindless monsters but still retain some emotion/intelligence and are only hostile to Neville because he openly attacks them and experiments on them,also the film gives more hope for mankind's future

I read somewhere that this was the original ending planned, but it tanked with the test audiences so they reshot the theatrical ending. I guess everyone has their own view, but I much prefer this ending. For me, the theatrical ending left too many previous scenes hanging without any explanation. This one was much more satisfying to me as it gave a nice twist to the whole 'who's the real monster' subtext. I'm not sure why other reviewers see it as a happy ending - hopeful is about the most optimistic reading I could give. Anyway, watch it and make your mind up - personally I'm just glad to get this version on iTunes as it redeems a film that for me was let down by the original end.

This ending is somewhat closer to the book. It's not the same but it is simillar.

another brill film by will smith! it had me scared :-0, happy :-) and crying ;,,-( all in one movie!!!
