Description

He was where he shouldn't have been and saw what he shouldn't have seen. Now, who will believe the word of a career thief and ex-con? Who will trust Luther Whitney when he says he saw a woman killed and that the man responsible for her death is the President of the United States? Clint Eastwood portrays Whitney and directs this crisp, finely acted thriller based on David Baldacci's best-selling novel. A stellar cast which includes Gene Hackman and Ed Harris creates well-rounded characters that intensify constantly spiraling game of cat and mouse between Whitney, local police and the highest levels of White House power. Eastwood is a master at steadily raising the stakes in thrillers. Here his mastery is absolute.

This film probably fits into the category of one of those good suspense movies of the '90s like, Crimson Tide, The Rock and Con-Air. It's not ABSOLUTELY AMAZING, but still a very good film.

If you judge a good film by the times you watch it, then this is a good film. It has a great cast all of whom put in fine performances. On the top is the story of the criminal faced with the greater crime and corruption by those who think themselves beyond the law, underneath is the developing connection between a father and daughter. "When you went after my little girl, that was entirely unacceptable" changes direction for Whitney (Clint Eastwood) and the president of the united states days are numbered.

Nothing surprising happens throughout the film. Eastwood and Hackman are always tremendous to watch but here they just appear to be acting by numbers. The film has little tension when you really expect it should for the style of film that it is. If you want a Eastwood/Hackman film then get Unforgiven.

This movie isn't as good as it deserved to be, but is still enjoyable.
