Description

They were five students with nothing in common, faced with spending a Saturday detention together in their high school library. At 7 a.m., they had nothing to say, but by 4 p.m. they had bared their souls to each other and become good friends. John Hughes, creator of the critically acclaimed Sixteen Candles, wrote, directed and produced this hilarious and often touching comedy starring Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy. To the outside world they were simply the Jock, the Brain, the Criminal, the Princess and the Kook, but to each other, they would always be The Breakfast Club.

I'd seen most of this in clips but glad I finally watched the whole thing. No film has ever better summed up the way teenagers struggle with how they are viewed by each other and by the adult world.

A quintessential 80s movie delving into the challenges and hardships of teenagers developing into adults. In my mind, the Genesis of movies such as the American Pie franchise and, in particular, the character of Bart Simpson.
  • Genuinely excellent - even without ‘nostalgic value'

I reached my mid-30s, somehow having managed not to see this. I’ve loved other John Hughes movies - can’t really explain why I never got around to it… … happy to report that - without the benefit of ‘thinking it was great when I was 12’ - I loved it. I can see how so many people of my age took this movie into their hearts as they did - it explores timeless, universal themes with genuine sensitivity and a lightness of touch that transcends ‘teen movie’ labelling. If, like me, you’ve never quite got around to seeing it, do so.
