Very authentic peiod feel and excellent acting. Found the whole plot a little unbelieveable though, and not much character development. You dont really get to understand what motivates the girl for wanting to kill the official other than that shes very easily led and naive. With what she has to go through I didnt feel it worked. Also with the official, why is he such a bad guy? Ok you can see hes a sadist but you dont get to understand really why he does what he does. It could have been so much more of a film, what does emerge is a load of hard bonking with a weak storyline to justify it. If thats your thing then there a so many other better films to watch than this. I bet the book is much better actually.

Very powerful film and quite difficult to watch in places. Wonderfully filmed. Oh and the 'modern' London taxis noticed by another poster were actually 1950's Austin Fx.s ... Still out of period but not quite so bad and more excusable.
  • A very sad story, not true love

Breaking one's family and a man's marriage is NOT a true love. The girl lost her virginity for her duty as a spy when she could be with virgin handsome boy who was her friend (Wang Leehom's roll) and the man (Tony's roll) was suffering miserable time murdering and torturing people because his job. It is all together a very sad story during the war time. Do not think this is about love. It is a tragedy.

It had a sad ending but it was better than the usual cliched endings. I thought Tony Leung's performance was spot on. The movie has English subtitles so I could understand what was going on. This is the best non-English speaking film I've seen in a long time. Great movie!! Has to be watched.

a beauty of a film!!!! everything from the script to the directing, to acting to music are all amazing!! perfection. time will fly u by watching this film, and to think this is a first major film for most of the actors in this film!! i believe the fact that this film was made not in english, keeps the natural beauty of everything that its trying to get across! ONE NOT TO BE MISSED!!

An excellent movie. I originally saw it on the big screen in Hong Kong and loved the period pieces of both Hong Kong and Shanghai. Whilst on smaller screens it loses some of its impact, it is still worth watching. The development of Tony Leung's character is masterful. Best of all it doesn't suffer from a contrived "happily ever after" ending. Buy it!
  • Beautiful film, ugly title

This is beautifully shot and designed, and the story is simple and affecting. It would have benefitted from some editing. We are given too much information about characters who remain undeveloped (the gang). Ugly title, too.
  • A master-class in great cinema.

Ang Lee uses subtle characterization and economic touches of gratuity to weave a compelling 2 hours 38 minutes of cinematic delight. Itunes is expensive but this film is well worth the price. I love this film so much I will be buying it on DVD as well.
