Description

Ben Affleck is ready for action, commanding the role of CIA agent Jack Ryan in this thrilling adventure based on the Tom Clancy bestseller. America's Cold War fears are rekindled after the President of Russia dies and is succeeded by a man with a cryptic past. But East-West tensions erupt when the CIA suspects that renegade Russian scientists are developing more nuclear weapons. Mobilized into action by CIA Director William Cabot (Morgan Freeman), Jack Ryan (Affleck) follows a danger-ridden trail to a shocking conclusion: terrorists plan to provoke a war between the U.S. and Russia - by detonating a nuclear bomb at a championship football game! Costarring James Cromwell and Liev Schreiber, The Sum of All Fears adds up to the year's most explosive entertainment.

Don't watch the trailer. It gives the whole damn thing away - no point in watching movie after!

I first saw this in the cinema and I've seen it a few times since. Make no mistake it's very, very good without being a classic - like Lord of the Rings, Jaws, or Goldfinger. I can't really say why that is. Perhaps it's the lack of coverage it had when released compared to other blockbusters, or it's Jack Ryan and not James Bond. It just lacks a certain x-factor, possibly the lack of continuity between the others in the series, unlike Bourne or Bond (or even the Marvel movies). Unlike some 007 films it's not OTT with ridiculous gadgets, plethoras of women, and characture OTT villians. The theme of the film makes the James Bond comparisons inevitable. However I think that's a bit off. It's more Bourne in the style and setting in the real world but with Ryan being more like Bourne (without the amnesia) rather than Blighty's favourite spy. In that respect it's more believable than 007. The acting from the main players is good, especially Afleck and Freeman. The script is decent and it fits every character well. While some aspects of the film are subtle for example the main villian is an understated guy (unlike for example Goldfinger), and the politics; the special effects are good. There's more action in this than in the other Ryan films. It's well worth watching especially if you liked the other films in the series. If I'm not mistaken this would be the first in chronological order of the current Jack Ryan films.

Political, Thrilling, Honest, Energetic and Intriguing. This is a good adaptation of Tom Clancy's work into a screenplay containing some action, some politics, some sorrow and overall a compelling storyline. Despite the cold war references, the themes are timeless and are as relevant to the current Middle East conflicts as they were to the Soviet era. Of all the Jack Ryan's there have been, my favourite is Baldwin in THFRO, but Ben Affleck makes a decent job of it. Worth a watch, HD is over-priced at £10, can get at your local supermarket for about £5 in SD, so iTunes may not be the place for you to watch. Enjoy

This is one of a couple films I always think of when i'm bored. A guy that has limited time to get proof for his theory and get it to the people that matter before two super powers lock horns after a low grade nuke blows in America. I love this because, it shows you what a man has to do and how far he needs to go to get the answers, while all the suits do is talk and point fingers.

Recommended. Gripping.I'm sure that the book would have much more 'content' and I wish I now had time to read the book. Like all his stories this is so credible it could be almost educational for those who didn't live through the great crisesof the 20th Century.

Promising start but by the end it was a profound disappointment, it failed to suspend my disbelief and I finished up resenting the time I spent. Poor.

Well, the fourth Jack Ryan movie and the first with Ben Affleck lives upto the others but that's about it. Not bad at all and certainly worth a watch but nothing special.
