A personal look at the French military leader’s origins and swift, ruthless climb to emperor. The story is viewed through the prism of Napoleon’s addictive, volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine.

Production as others say is great, but I do think it should have been accented or in French. American and other accents in these productions cheapen it sounds daft. Even the pronunciation of his name by other cast is cringeworthy. Bone-ah-pard ! Give me a break
A Missed Opportunity….

Saw in the cinema and really wanted to like it, but….despite the great production (as always) the telling of this story fell flat. We don’t ever really know what motivates Napoleon, why he is who he is, why he does what he does. We just see a man of action, fighting, bullying, making love (or at least some version of it). It all leaves you feeling a bit lost and detached from the sound and fury.
It’s also hard to like Napoleon or anyone else in this biopic. Fair enough. He probably wasn’t very likeable…but then neither is Tony Soprano, but we learn about what makes him tick, we start to care. Old Bonaparte is just distant, angry, driven…but we never really get to care for him, or his goals, which is a pity and a missed opportunity to make something so much more empathetic and incisive.
