Description

A criminal mastermind unleashes a twisted form of justice in Spiral, the terrifying new chapter from the book of SAW. Working in the shadow of his father, an esteemed police veteran (Samuel L. Jackson), brash Detective Ezekiel "Zeke" Banks (Chris Rock) and his rookie partner (Max Minghella) take charge of a grisly investigation into murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city’s gruesome past. Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the center of the killer’s morbid game.

This is not a SAW film - other than a couple of vague, pointless and unconnected references to the original series just to justify the use of the SAW name on the movie cover. It really seemed like they made this very very poor film and the studio figured out a way to release it by linking to the SAW films so that it simply didn’t get thrown in the bin, where it belongs. This is a poorly acted cliché ridden police drama with some murders that involve torture. The film is so badly written that the murderer is obvious within the first 5 minutes of the film and then when you get the big reveal (and the usual montage of scenes from earlier for the stupid people to explain) you just think “yeah, I know.” It is dull and boring and despite the torture and gore, there is no jeopardy and you just don’t care because the characters are all so empty and uninteresting.

Has the things you love about saw films. Also has Chris rock and Samuel Jackson.. first huge names to get involved with this franchise. It’s a decent entry that works in the timeline but also as stand alone film. It’s like saw meet seven
  • The best in the series for a long time!

I had little to no expectations going in, critic reviews battered this movie and most of the saw franchise is frankly laughable. This however is probably the best one since saw and saw2. It is entertaining and kept me engaged, the better movie would have explored the characters story deeper and this could have been something special. I hope they continue in this direction in future.

Is this actually gory or is it a more of a detective type film or are there traps like in other saw films?
