Description

Theodore “Theo” Decker (Ansel Elgort) was 13 years old when his mother was killed in a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The tragedy changes the course of his life, sending him on a stirring odyssey of grief and guilt, reinvention and redemption, and even love. Through it all, he holds on to one tangible piece of hope from that terrible day...a painting of a tiny bird chained to its perch. The Goldfinch.

A really interesting film based on the book by Donna Tartt. Deals with a lot of interesting themes with a reserved poignant performance by the stellar Nicole Kidman.

I really enjoyed this in the cinema and am glad to "own" it now. Unlike America, we seem to have not got a blu ray release, just a regular DVD, and 4K on iTunes. So digital it'll have to be for me. Barring a few structural changes by director John Crowley, this is a really faithful adaption of the 900 page Donna Tartt novel. I actually saw the film first and it made me curious about reading the tome of a book (by listening to a 32 hour audiobook of course...) and I found the actors performances were really true to the characters of the novel. Small details are perfectly captured. It's a wonder why critics were so savage about this. Richard Deakin, currently being lauded every which way for his cinematography in 1917, is also on board as cinematographer here, and the special features help show how he introduced a focus blur effect to illustrate the main character's eroding memories. If you let it be, The Goldfinch is absorbing, atmospheric, still, and at the same time frenetic. It's a story about big and small problems. It probably would have made a more successful TV miniseries but that may not have been better if the talent involved wasn't who we have here. It's very impactful and should stay with you long after you finish. It stands out amongst more ephemeral mainstream entertainment as daring to be different, and I can't recommend it enough.

One of my favourite films of 2019. I went into this not having read the book and was treated with a stellar cast giving great performances, exquisite photography, music and a compelling and absorbing story. What more could you want.

The Goldfinch means we’ll and for the most part is a good movie. It falters slightly however with a slow meandering story that doesn’t quite prepare itself for the finale, rather it stumbles into it.

I saw this at the cinema and had to pre-order as I can’t wait to watch it again. It is slow to begin with, and in some ways jarring, but as the narrative continues you feel all the unraveled threads beginning to weave their way back together again to culminate in an overall experience that is well worth the watch.
