Description

Set in the glamour of 1950's post-war London, renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) and his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville) are at the center of British fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars, heiresses, socialites, debutants and dames with the distinct style of The House of Woodcock. Women come and go through Woodcock's life, providing the confirmed bachelor with inspiration and companionship, until he comes across a young, strong-willed woman, Alma (Vicky Krieps), who soon becomes a fixture in his life as his muse and lover. Once controlled and planned, he finds his carefully tailored life disrupted by love.

  • Languorous & slow moving..

A rather languorous and slow moving film. It gives you insight into the relationship of an ill-suited & odd couple, of whose relationship I’d rather have no intimate knowledge of. The movie holds your interest, however it gives no satisfaction or delight and leaves you with an odd Machiavellian air. Watch if you have nothing better to do.

This was so bad that I think that all those who left a food review were either on drugs or just a tad full ‘special’.
  • Boring.

DDL is obviously an acting god, but the story left me cold. Not enough to keep me interested. Sorry. Boring.

Phantom Thread is a growling aggression of old-fashioned sophistication and elitism, held back on a loose leash from its prey upon the childish provocation of youth. If Anderson’s work has often been compared to his peers, Boogie Nights to Scorsese’s Goodfellas, Magnolia to Robert Altman’s Nashville. Phantom Thread is undoubtedly his Hitchcockian subjection of melodic lusting, devised as a romantic venture, but something dark and solemn lingers underneath. Anderson’s film is beautifully suave and persuasive in terms of its expertly delivered cinematography, as well as wonderfully soothing inducing score from Johnny Greenwood. Yet for audiences not necessarily aquatinted with Anderson’s work, Phantom Thread and the delightfully potent performance of Day-Lewis will most likely find this highly inaccessible.
