Description

Some people build fences to keep people out - and other people build fences to keep people in. Academy Award winner® Denzel Washington and Academy Award nominee® Viola Davis deliver the year’s most powerful performances in the film adaptation of August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Fences. Set in 1950s Pittsburgh, the film takes a passionate look at former Negro-league baseball player Troy Maxson (Washington) as he fights to provide for those he loves in a world that threatens to push him down. Washington’s directorial triumph pulses with the universal truths of love, forgiveness, and happiness despite what lies beyond your own fence.

The film starts a little slow and seems to drag out for the first 20 minutes while Washington is giving his opening performance but it gets gripping as he goes. The acting is of the usual Washington style, he’s on top form. I wouldn’t say this is his best film but that’s just my opinion. It is certainly one of his best. The story does tend to flick around a little so one does have to concentrate and watch it carefully and thoroughly. From what I’ve studied on American history the story does seem to reflect the general way of life and certainly it tells a story of love, trust, betrayal and hurt very well. Powerful performances by all the main cast. Definitely one to watch / rent or buy.

I saw this movie in March and I thought the story was interesting and that I studied black American history in my history classes in my old school, but was a bit hard to study. When I saw the movie, I firstly didn't understand what the actors were saying, and secondly I didn't know what was going on between and the actors and that their characters had hopes and dreams that didn't come true, because THIS - THIS - is Black America. Again, I thought the movie was good to watch. Seb Sandford
