Description

This eight part series follows Foo Fighters as they make their 8th album. Directed by Dave Grohl, each episode is devoted to different American musical landmarks, chronicling the histories, cultures, environments--and of course the human beings—that define each city’s unique musical identity. Set in Austin, Chicago, Los Angeles, Nashville, New Orleans, New York, Seattle, and Washington, D.C., Sonic Highways features appearances from the local legends who have become the musical and cultural ambassadors of those cities, including Buddy Guy, Joe Walsh, Dolly Parton, Rick Nielsen, Bad Brains, Chuck D, Gibby Haynes, Allen Toussaint, Carrie Underwood, and a host of others. Described by Grohl as a love letter to the history of American music, Grohl and bandmates Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett and Pat Smear, along with producer Butch Vig, based themselves at a legendary studio integral to the unique history and character of each of these great American musical capitals. One song was recorded in each city as the band delved hard into the local musical currents: discovering how each region shaped these musicians in their formative years, and in turn the impact those people had on the cultural fabric of their hometowns.

If you have even a single solitary iota of interest in music, you NEED to watch this series. Not only is the production and story telling some of the very best around, but the way that it delves into the history of modern music is quite simply outstanding. It's a triumphant, joyful, enigmatic, interesting and beautiful insight, culminating in what must be the Foo Fighter's most complete, well rounded and mature piece to date. If there was ever any doubt as to the greatness of the Foo Fighters and Dave Grohl, then cynics can merely be directed to this. Awesome!

I'm a Foo Fan and thought this was going to be a series about the Foo only. Massively surprised by this series putting more meat on the bones of the Sonic Highways record. Incredible insight to the music of America and an inspired idea. Listening to music legends talk about influences and their own personal growth in the music industry was fantastic to hear. Beautifully shot and each episode finishes with the song recorded in each city, with lyrics on screen drawn from conversations and experiences of people connected to the city. Well worth watching again and again.

If you need any kind of inspiration to write a song then simply follow in the steps of the Foo Fighters. Not only an extremely insightful documentary about the band, the music and each city, but an opportunity to remind each of us that we can all go out and make music if we want.

Love the Foo's and was looking forward to finding out more about the personalities and the dynamic of the band. Unfortunately this is more of a film about late 80's & early 90's punk and the underground scene in America. If you're into this very niche bit of music history then you'll love the film. Otherwise like me you'll probably find it a bit boring and pretty lacking.

When Dave Grohl goes a strollin' through the history of US music, we all benefit from his insight as both a talented musician and documentary director (see Sound City soon!). Sneaky peaky on HBO already? Me too but do you have your own copy? Me neither....but I do now. Guaranteed to make you pick up your geetar and hunt the web for classic tracks that inspired Led Zep, The Beatles, Hendrix and many more. Recommended.
