Quite the most beautifully crafted documentary series I've had the pleasure of watching. The magic is in its uncluttered simplicity, in part dictated by the nature of much of the source material; wonderful black and white stills, but with sympathetic scoring and authoritative and engaging contributors.

This is an incredible tour de force. It covers all aspects of this war from the slaughter of the battlefield to the feelings of the civilians at home. The collection of photographs, the historians interviewed, the superb rendition of the words of participants by great actors: couldn't be bettered.
