Description

In the deepest reaches of space, the fight to save all human life from extinction has begun in this science-fiction adventure that launched the Battlestar Galactica phenomenon! Hopeful for lasting peace following centuries of intense warfare, the Twelve Colonies gather to sign a treaty with their dreaded enemies, the Cylons. But after an act of treachery on the eve of the ceremony, the Cylons launch a devastating surprise attack, destroying the Colonies' home planets and most of their military strength. A lone flagship battlestar, the Galactica, led by Commander Adama (Lorne Greene), remains to aid the surviving colonists on their epic journey for a new home to a far-off legendary planet — Earth. They must survive the pursuing Cylons in a series of epic battles that will determine the fate of the human race in this non-stop action-packed classic filled with cutting-edge special effects by John Dykstra (Star Wars, Spider-Man).

And no season 2 listed. The Blu-ray has been out for a while and the price £4.99 was appealing but no HD made it a complete turn off. No season 2 or the offshoot series either means this is a non-starter!

Battlestar Galactica in 1978, did what no other SF show on TV had ever done, tell an epic story on a scale that was unrivaled, probably until the broadcast of the first V mini-series. Unlike many series of that day, its episodes aren't interchangeable throughout its run, a certain order occurs, with loose story arcs. While some episodes are cliched and contain bad science and repetitive visual effects sequences, many of the two-part stories are feature film quality. Creator, Glen A. Larson mixed some of his Mormon upbringing into the show's mythology, while leading men Richard Hatch and Dirk Benedict are the engaging heroes Apollo and Starbuck, anchored by the calm and assured Lorne Greene as Commander Adama. The series won two Emmy Awards for visual effects and costume design and Richard Hatch was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance. The best episodes are the pilot – Saga Of A Star World, Lost Planet Of The Gods, Gun On Ice Planet Zero, The Living Legend, War of The Gods and the final episode, The Hand Of God. in 2009, it was announced that a film based on this original series of Battlestar Galactica was in development from Universal Studios.

I'm sorry to say this gets 1 star based on the value equation Its a fun series and its great to see how this evolved into the modern version, but as other commenters have pointed out, it hasn't aged well at all Perfect for a cheap casual purchase, not worth anywhere near 35 pounds though
  • Fond memories replaced by reality

I watched the first couple. I'm sorry to say it is as suspected - a bit of a drag. The Cylons look great, all shiny and 70's disco. For TV back then, the dogfights are impressive. However, neither the kitsch factor nor nostalgia would sustain me for a whole series. I had trouble getting through the two episodes I watched. Yes, I loved it back in the day, but I can't say I was too critical of writing or performances. If, like me, you are a huge fan of the recent Ron Moore incarnations (BSG & Caprica) it is fun to trace the original elements that were later adapted, but beyond that comparison of the two shows is futile. It's hokey fun that once entertained, but no longer holds up. A curiosity for fans of the remake and maybe those who remember it the first time around, but at this price (currently £35.76 for the series), I'd recommend preserving your memories and saving your pennies.
  • Great show - shame about the cost!

What a great show this was, a true cult classic! Looks a bit dated now but isn't that why we love these shows?! It's also interesting to see how many storylines have made their way into the "reimagined" show (also great). While it's nice to see shows like this available for download, the price is astronomical. I paid less than £35.00 for a special edition DVD box set 3 years ago! Personally, I still feel there's a difference between having a "real" boxset (complete with artwork, booklets, interviews, commentaries & special features) and a digital download.
