Some you rent some you buy, wish I had rented this!. Bloomkamp normally has a point, an allegory, I am afraid to admit its lost on me. With great effects, good acting, and fantastic photography this should be another meaningful film, challenging us on our perspective, of AI vs Man, or of our own mortality and our attempts to beat it. Instead we get a blurred film with poor character development thats only moral seems to be that none of us are suitable as parents and that as long as we live forever any behaviour is acceptable. No character comes out of this film as likeable and although this may be Bloomkamps point it leaves the emotional end sequences with out a contextual framework, If chappie has worked out that killing people is bad he wouldn’t save his “mommy”. His maker and him share no relationship yet we are forced to accept the end sequence? (trying to avoid spoilers here!). Although I like the film for its ideas it does not carry them off well or believably, this is frustrating from a director who’s previous films have incredibly tight story lines. I leave you with these plot holes… Would a director of a company that is specialising in robots that think for themselves not listen to the employee that has found the holy grail of AI? Does Tetravaal have any security? It is too much to ask of an audience to look past these basic errors then believe in the emotional development of the characters based on such huge and basic flaws. As audiences we have become smarter and aren’t prepared to accept a six shot gun firing 20 rounds, I feel the director has left us in the same boat here with both the underpinnings of the story and the emotional depths of the characters interplay. Some you rent some you buy, wish I had rented this!.

If you like other Neill blomkamp films, then you will like this. The script and acting aren't brilliant, but that is made up for by the stunning effects, plot twists and the development of chappie
  • Great FX in search of a plot

This is like a Children’s Workshop version of Robocop. Amateur. Embarrassingly devoid of emotion and plot, with some risible characters. I’m a huge fan of sci-fi, but Chappie is a teenager’s amateur home video with a Hollywood budget. An appalling misfire. What a waste of talent.

What could have been. Only thinly explores the issues surrounding A.I. to instead opt for a banal homage to Robocop, in the process wasting talent such as Jackman and Weaver. How human consciousness can be collected and downloaded through a couple of hooked up gaming consoles is laughable.
  • If District 9 was better than this ….

District 9 was an insult to my back side - this awful remake of Short Circuit’s out-takes should warn others not to waste money, energy or wake time.

Don't get the split of likes/dislikes with this film... Maybe it's a bit too 'out there' for some... I thought it was great - very different, which the SA angle adds as per District 9, some great special effects, insane music - in fact it could be a very long Die Antwoord video - which is good news for people who would like that... and bad news for the rest... which I guess is what the split in reviews is all about.

A lovingly crafted, beautifully executed film with humour and heart. It pays homage to films of the past whilst telling it's own story in a unique aesthetic.

A weak and dreadfully acted film. Plot line was dreadful. I have nothing positive to say at all. I'm glad I only rented this film.

This was not the "BEST FILE EVER" and either was it the worst. There was some hammy acting from the supporting actors, so can be marked down for that. I really enjoyed the development of Chappie character throughout the film and how interacted with them. 4 Stars. The film made me laugh and was a modern version of 'Short Circuit' in a way. Approach the film knowing it isn't the best, and you may not be so disappointed.
