Description

A general of the 8th Air Corps in England gradually moves from being a martinet to being a victim of breakdown as his concern for his men undermines his health. He is involved daily in sending men to their deaths and he grows ever more protective of them.

    Peck is outstanding in his portrayal of an air force General under stress. This film looks at the lonliness and stress of command. Nostalgic, sad and at times funny, this portrayal of the power of the mind to protect us once the line is crossed was well before it's time. A good ensemble cast but worth watching for Pecks performance alone, mesmerising.
