So sad seeing people saying that this is really new kind of a film… This story was written by a russian writer Leo Tolstoy in end of 19th century…)) By the way as i have read the book in russian i can say that it is really good adaptation… Well done.

If you have read the book then I am sorry to say, but you will be disappointed. A simple film will never be able to reach the standard of Tolstoys novel. He delves into the characters in such a way that simply can't be depicted in a movie. Therefore I don't blame the actors or producers … it's just simply impossible to live up to the novel - and what an amazing read it was! If you have not read the book however, do not watch this film unless you have. The movie is simply not enough to understand Tolstoys story. Please read his work first and then come back to the film if you must!

I can understand previous reviewers frustration with the staging of this film as its not what some people will want this being a classic story. However, if you want originality, imagination, and beautiful film-making that Joe Wright does so well then you won't be disappointed. It closely resembles Moulin Rouge by Luhrmann in the way it's filmed and staged. The acting is excellent particularly knightley and law. It is missing something that makes it a true classic but it has more visual flair in its opening 10 minutes than a dozen Hollywood blockbusters do in their entire running time. Not for everyone, but I loved it.

We were very disappointed with this film as we were expecting a traditionally filmed historical romance. Instead, the film took a surreal approach - with scenes freezing, characters and scenery disappearing leaving the protagonists alone, and on it goes. The film seems to be confused as to what it is: taking a nuanced novel and turning it into part story / part musical / part theatre. The result is a two dimensional film that failed to engage us. Take for example a train scene with the locomotive chugging along: what could have been a very evocative scene turned into a joke as the train was clearly (and intended to be) a toy train. If you're looking for an interesting piece of theatre, this could be for you. If you're looking for a lavish re-telling of Tolstoy's remarkable novel, this is not it.
  • Simply awful...

Stoppard's screenplay was ambitious but it failed to deliver partly because Kiera Knightly in the title role is not a good enough actress to hold it together...it would be going to far to describe the film as rubbish but not far off

One of Russian Literature's greatest love stories completely ruined by disjointed and rather incredulous cinematography. There is of course some superb acting from Keira Knightley and Jude Law and the costumes were a true masterpiece of the wardrobe departments skills. Otherwise if I were Tolstoy I'd be suing the producers

It was totally mind boggling with all the various scene changes between theatre and real life... Just difficult to follow and therefore difficult to enjoy!
  • Not worth the rental
