Description

Caius Martius ‘Coriolanus’ (RALPH FIENNES), a revered and feared Roman General is at odds with the city of Rome and his fellow citizens. Pushed by his controlling and ambitious mother Volumnia (VANESSA REDGRAVE) to seek the exalted and powerful position of Consul, he is loath to ingratiate himself with the masses whose votes he needs in order to secure the office. When the public refuse to support him, Coriolanus’s anger prompts a riot which culminates in his expulsion from Rome. The banished hero then allies himself with his sworn enemy Tullus Aufidius (GERARD BUTLER) to take his revenge on the city.

I’m not a fan of Shakespearean dialogue in general but in terms of story he’s one of the best. I think the story holds up well with the modern day setting. It would have been much better with updating the dialogue too. I found it incongruous and almost jarring. RF was superb. Overall this is a well made movie that’s okay with the one flaw that I pointed out.

Ralph Fiennes is as talented a director as he is an actor. This is a brilliant adaptation of Shakespeare's work.

If you love and understand film you'll enjoy the magic and passion portrayed within this script. This modern adaption of Shakespeare so cleverly portrays the mechanisms of war and the politics of war management, showing the viewer that time evolves yet human philosophies remain the same. I was engrossed by the emotion of Gerard Butler as he spoke both orally and visually the magic of Shakespeare. A cleverly produced movie that will always gain good ratings of individuals that understand film. And yet sadly poor ratings of individuals that do not!!!

This is what a film should be. Within minutes I was emotionally invested. The whole cast was brilliant but Fiennes was transcendent. Like McKellen's Richard the Third, this proves that the Bard's work is still relevant to the modern world. If only it had been portrayed thus when I was in grade school.

Ralph Fiennes first outing as a director is frankly AMAZING. I loved this film, Loved the dialogue in a modern setting. Ralph was spectacular as ever. Brilliant. Just watch it.

Shakespeare a genius with words and in the theatre. Unfortunately utter crap in the cinema/film genre. Has no place place hear. Watched 15mins couldn't hack it. I love watching French Japanese German Swedish films with subtitles but not Shakespeare dialogue just rubbish.
