Description

Golden Globe® nominee Ewan McGregor (Star Wars I, II, III), Academy Award® nominee Christopher Plummer (Inside Man), and Mélanie Laurent (Inglourious Basterds) star in Beginners, an uplifting comedy about how funny and transformative life can be. When graphic designer Oliver (McGregor) meets free-spirited Anna (Laurent) shortly after his father (Plummer) has passed away, Oliver realizes just how much of a beginner he is when it comes to long-lasting romantic love. Memories of his father, who, following the death of his wife of 45 years, came out of the closet at age 75 to live a full, energized, and wonderfully tumultuous gay life, encourage Oliver to open himself up to the potential of a true relationship. Inspired by writer/director Mike Mills’ own father, it’s an original love story that critics cheer is “smart, poignant and often hilarious!” (Karen Durbin, Elle)

Great story telling with compelling performances. Very sad yet uplifting.

Don't waste you money on this film, it's very slow and never really gets going.
  • Boring

Why do the boring films always get Oscar nominations.?This is like a jumble sale. You feel like you have to stay until the end incase you miss something, but you never come across anything remotely exciting. This film sent me to sleep so I re-watched it, and it was even worse the second time around.
  • Sweet....but boring

Occasionally engaging, but more often just SLOW and often twee with it. After 30 minutes all of the main characters became increasingly annoying. I am not sure why this movie is described as a 'comedy'? Perhaps because there isn't a 'pretentious' category? Final word of criticism came from my wife, who fell asleep.
  • CC Captions don't work

Was really disappointed that dispite saying it has captions, and an Ipad set to show captions, none appeared. For once it mattered as the dialogue is often soft and hard to hear, my wife with perfect hearing also struggled. What I heard of it I enjoyed.
  • Which bit was 'uplifting'? :-)

It was just 'ok'. Nothing offensive, a tad boring perhaps... I cant pull up any real emotions from watching it at all. But there was nothing awful about it either. Well acted. Good ideas. Just a bit non-descript. If there was nothing else around on the eShelf that you wanted to see, this film would do fine.

One of the best films I've seen for a while, I wouldn't define it as a comedy though - It's a feel-good film that can make you think.

Adore this movie! If you're looking for a feel good film then this is it. If you enjoy films such as Amelie, Jeux d'Enfants, Priceless, 500 days of summer etc then you will probably enjoy this. The movie takes a quirky journey (very different from most american 'hollywood' movies) and makes you appreciate how fun it is to be spontaneous and creative sometimes. Being familiar with the actors probably helps in enjoyment factor, but even if you don't know them, their characters reel you in. Definitly worth a watch. :)
