Description

The Pillars of the Earth is a sweeping epic of good and evil, treachery and intrigue, violence and beauty. This sensuous, spirited and passionate story is set against a backdrop of war, religious strife and power struggles which tears lives and families apart. In that time, there rises a magnificent Cathedral in Kingsbridge. Against this backdrop, human dramas and love stories entwine: Tom, the master builder, Aliena, the noblewoman, the sadistic Lord William, Philip, the prior of Kingsbridge, Jack, the artist in stone work and Ellen, the woman from the forest who casts a curse. At once, this is a sensuous and enduring love story and an epic that shines with the fierce spirit of a passionate age. Ken Follett masterfully weaves these stories through the political turmoil of 12th century England, creating a relevant and viable world for today's audience and for generations to come.

Gosh i thought it would never end but it did and i finished thinking "hmmm... good...yes...very good" I thoroughly recommend watching this fabulous drama if only for a fascinating - if in depth - view of 12th century England/Angleterre/Land of Hope and Glory. BOOM xx
  • Well done interpretation of classic book

I really love the way that Ken Follett writes and I loved this 12th century historical adventure of love, intrigue and the fulfillment of a dream to build a heavenly cathedral. This excellent "film" interpretation certainly does it credit. From the casting of the fantastic and thankfully British actors, to the incredible art direction and cinematography - this dramatisation of the Pillars of the Earth certainly doesn't hold back on the punches, gore and seedy side of life back then It is well worth watching - notably because it is clear that Ken Follett had a strong hand as consultant over the way the dramatisation turned out and it was greatly enhanced by the masterful Ridley Scott direction. A fantastic tale and well told! Bravo!

watching the film made me realise how well written the book was, as everything I laid eyes on was as I had pictured while reading the story. Absolutely loved every minute of it. Find myself wishing I could go back in time and be one of the characters, then the credits come up and I'm back in reality :-( how boring this world has become! Recommend this to anyone interested in history.
  • Cheap and Cheerful Romp

A Generational Story, based in the 12th century, which is a throughly enjoyable romp with stereotypes . Not Big film but 'reasonably budgeted' TV movie. Should be sold in the original 8 episodes not as an expensive two part film. Recommended

Absolutely brilliant. I am not easily impressed and guess plot after plot of the most well written books, but this had me hooked. Well worth the money. Thought the actors were well cast and superb. Excellent portrayal by the guy who plays Tom in spooks, Liam Garrigan and Jack. I am currently reading Tom Follets next book, its harder going but very in depth. Enjoy!
