Description

An adaptation based on a novel by Christopher Isherwood, A SINGLE MAN is a romantic tale of love interrupted, the isolation that is an inherent part of the human condition, and ultimately the importance of the seemingly smaller moments in life. Set in Los Angeles in 1962, at the height of the Cuban missile crisis, A SINGLE MAN, tells the story of a British college professor (Colin Firth) who dwells on the past and cannot see his future. We follow him through a single day, where a series of events and encounters, ultimately leads him to decide if there is a meaning to life after the death of his long time partner, Jim (Matthew Goode, Watchmen).

I watched this just now. Great story and Firth is really good. I think is that kind of movie that you watch and you wont watch it for years again.
  • An amazing adaptation of a beautiful book.

Colin Firth outdoes himself in this role, he is phenominal. If the short story is one of your favoyrites, watch this! You will not be disappointed. The visuals are stunning and the colour usage is moving. Truly a masterpiece!

This film is about a Gay man who loses his boyfriend and this is not even alluded to in the iTunes description and whilst I am not homophobic, my wife is a big fan of Colin Firth and we were expecting a “traditional” romantic drama, It wasn’t the sort of film we were in the mood to view. Down to the film, it’s very slow and difficult to follow, I guess you have to be in the right mood for it.
  • A fastidious gay man. The End

The film is beautifully shot, everyone is well dressed, the cars and seen setting is fantastic, but the story is sadly lacking. Pretty tedious overall.

If I was to use just one word to descrbe a single man it would be this - classy. Coming from fashion designer Tom Ford and some of the team behind Mad Men this film oozes style from every single frame. It's one of the best shot films in a long time. The story too does not disappoint, and revolves around the premise of a heartbroken man who has decided to end his life, only to see the world in a new light as his last day unfolds. It's great stuff and superbly acted by the whole cast, particularly of course, Colin Firth, who has never been better. A wonderful movie then, and an incredible debut from Ford.

I adore this film. It's a study of mourning, life, and the cruel irony that lies within. I recommend anyone to give it a go, you'd be surprised at how easily it grabs you and draws you in. Don't bother just renting it, buy it. It's a classic.

I gritted my teeth before purchase, as I suspected the content would be challenging, but now have no hesitation in recommending. Fabulous acting, direction, camera work and editing produce a film of exquisite delivery. Easily one of my top twentyfive films of all time and as I'm getting rather ancient, means my choices are perhaps slightly wider than some. Very highly recommended.
