Description

Academy Award® winners Anthony Hopkins (The Silence of the Lambs) and Benicio Del Toro (Traffic) tear up the screen in this action-packed thriller. Lawrence Talbot (Del Toro) is lured back to his family estate to investigate the savage murder of his brother by a bloodthirsty beast. There, Talbot must confront his childhood demons, his estranged father (Hopkins), his brother's grieving fiancée (Emily Blunt, The Devil Wears Prada) and a suspicious Scotland Yard Inspector (Hugo Weaving, The Matrix Trilogy). When Talbot is bitten by the creature, he becomes eternally cursed and soon discovers a fate far worse than death. Inspired by the classic Universal film that launched a legacy of horror, The Wolfman brings the myth of a cursed man back to its iconic origins.

I'm a fan of the Werewolf genre and was excited about this remake only to be disappointed on cinema release. After An American werewolf in London and the Howling you tend to expect better transformations more terrifying monsters. Anyway i watched this again and i liked it better 2nd time around. This isn't perfect, but by alot of todays Werewolf flicks it's definitely the best one. The monster itself is makes up for it's simplistic look with some brutal savagery and decent enough use of CGI when needed. In the end Anthony Hopkins steals the show compared to Twilight or TruBlood versions of Werewolves you can forgive this.
  • Why not the American release?

I love this film. But wish it was the directors cut that I watched on dvd years ago on my ex’s international dvd player. Even the uk blue ray release that had both the theatrical and directors cut. The beginning removed him acting and backstage with his cast while learning of his brother. During his travels before the carriage ride to his fathers home, an old man talks with him and after finding out where he’s going giving him the cane with a wolf on it, but not before showing him it has a hidden sword to protect himself. Even when he ends up home he shows his father who inspects it. Or when he was at the tavern and gets mad when they keep saying stuff about gypsies that he reminds them that his mother was one before leaving. To the paperboy he paid for all his newspapers to trash them so no one would recognize him. Even getting his outfit from a poor man before making his way back home. Or when Singh grabs his gun before the scene is cut away to the next when it’s clearly too late he’s dead by Mr. talbot as mentioned in the film the gun powder was removed from the bullets so obviously that’s why he’s dead instead of being able to take the shot. I bought this as I missed watching this film but I wish it had the extras we got on dvd and blue ray. That instead of this they gave you both the theatrical (even though I don’t like that version), and the directors cut. Like what they did when they released Aliens on here. Options are always nice. Especially when I found out in America they at least get the directors cut on their iphone films. Hopefully this can be rectified sometime in the future with both versions and the extras. I gave the stars as I genuinely like the film but wished for the other version.

Basically a remake of all the old wolf man stories. It's just a cool film and is filled with charming moments and well adjusted performances. I think the hate for this film may just come from the "werewolf" aspect. I really find vampires uninteresting for example and as such don't have patience for it. So as a matter of course, be smart, don't watch it if howling at the moon seems stupid to you.......

the original wolfman was a classic this ruined everything the original tried to do which was be a thriller with a descent plot - and in my opinion Anthony hopkins career died with this movie

A re-telling of the classic Universal film of the same name this movie fails on nearly every front. The story is poor. The acting ( from some of my favourite actors) is poor too. This could have been great. It's not.

I really liked this movie. Ok the subject matter is not that original but they have done this one really well. Each scene is like a painting and the production is beautiful frame by frame. Its dark, well acted by everyone and an interesting story. In many ways it reminded me of Dracula in what it is trying to achieve. An underrated little gem if you are really into movies and can handle layers and depth. Not for those who aren't.

This is NOT a horror film. Nor is it a drama or a romance film. At best it's a comedy but I'm pretty sure that's unintentional. Don't bother.
