Description

Jeff Bridges won an Academy Award® for his role as the richly comedic, semi-tragic, romantic anti-hero, Bad Blake, in the debut feature film, Crazy Heart, from writer-director Scott Cooper. Bad Blake is a broken-down, hard-living country music singer who's had way too many marriages, far too many years on the road, and one too many drinks way too many times. And yet, Bad can’t help but reach for salvation with the help of Jean (two-time Golden Globe®-nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal), a journalist who discovers the real man behind the musician. As he struggles down the road of redemption, Bad learns the hard way just how tough life can be on one man’s crazy heart. Crazy Heart won two Academy Awards® for Best Actor and Best Original Song.

Disappointing, slow to the point of boring. Jeff Bridges mumbles his way through the movie.

Geoff Bridges is excellent in his portrayal of Crazy Heart. A good story line. Moving.
  • Superb drama, and a career best for Bridges

This film has been compared to The Wrestler, and while it doesn't reach the stratospheric heights that film did, it's still a superb piece of work. Bridges is fantastic, delivering the performance of his career and earning his oscar. Gyllenhaal is fine too and there are nice extended cameos from Robert Duvall and Collin Farrell too. All support Bridges admirably here and never steal the show. The music plays a big part here as you would expect, and as someone who has never listened to country before I liked what I heard. To my uneducated ears it all seemed to work very well indeed, and Bridges sings his own songs too, which always makes a huge difference. This is an easy film to recommend if you enjoy quality drama made for adults. No dumbed down brainless film making here, this is the type of film we get too rarely now, making it one not to miss.

The reviews caused me to view this despite my misgivings about the casting. The plot was hackneyed and the songs the same tired country themes you could have heard fifty years ago. I think you need to be a Country fan to like this.
  • Soundtrack is great

But the movie doesn't live up to the hype. It's a little boring in places
  • Mostly dull and formulaic

Sadly it doesn't really rise much above a standard Hollywood formula. While it is heartwarming in a way it is scarcely believable in parts - him getting over a lifetime of alcoholism in less than one minute of screen time beggars belief. Jeff Bridges is largely excellent though he does have a tendency to mumble through passages that are hard to hear. The music never rises above the OK. So, Bridges is worth seeing though the film is only average - prepare to be underwhelmed.
  • Disappointing film

Disappointing film due in large part to a rather dull and slow script. Reasonable acting but strong suggestion that Oscar was based more on sentiment than his one dimensional performance.

An amazing film. First class acting. Defiantly going to be the first film that I buy for my iPad.
