Description

It's Baltimore, 1962, and a rebellious "pleasantly plump" teenager with the biggest bouffant on the block, Tracy (Daytime Emmy Award-nominee Ricki Lake - "Serial Mom," TV's "The Ricki Lake Show") attempts to be one of the featured stars on a popular dance show and win the coveted "Miss Auto Show" crown as she fights against racial discrimination in this film written and directed by John Waters ("Cry Baby," "Serial Mom") in an ode to the dance craze of the 60's. Featuring Divine ("Polyester," "Pink Flamingos") in his/her last gender-bending role as Tracy's mother. Also starring Emmy-nominee Sonny Bono ("The Sonny and Cher Comedy hour"), Emmy-nominee Jerry Stiller ("Zoolander," TV's "Seinfeld"), and Deborah Harry of the legendary rock band Blondie.

    Compared to the proper version with the songs in,this seems like some sort of parody,bad quality footba,spoof acting and just laughable in the wrong way,not good and unwatchable

    As part of the generation introduced to Hairspray mainly through the 2007 reboot, I didn't know what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. Mostly I was very curious to see how the two versions differed, and once I stopped comparing them, I started to really enjoy it. Although, I generally enjoy musicals more, so I personally prefer the 2007 one, as it was much bouncier, and easier for viewers to digest. (I probably wouldn't have enjoyed the original as much if I'd seen it in 2007, being about 10 or 11 at the time) But the original is definitely worth the watch if you want more realism and focus on story telling, something I think the musical version suffers from with its stronger emphasis on music and feel-good vibes.

    If you're going to watch Hairspray, make sure it's this version. Great music, and Divine playing not one but two parts!
